Well obviously this is for people who joined the United States Military. Which branch are/were/want to be, in. Are you active duty, or retired? Please vote in the poll.

Army-Hooah!
Marine-Semper Fi
Air Force-(no official motto)
Navy-Don't Tread On Me
Coast Guard-(unknown)

I want to be a Navy SEAL.

Me I grew up in the 70's my motto has always been that I would fight for my country if the president of the United States was standing in front or beside me;because I didn't trust the SOB behind me!

Why does this only apply to the US? why not any military branch. If so neither still applies to me since I am not really planning to be in the military, but if I was to join the military it would be the RAF.

Because to tell the truth, I know nothing about the militaries in other countries. Sorry.

I'm in the USAFR. Which, for all the retards out there, is the United States Air Force Reserves.

No way I'd ever do active duty. As a reservist I have several options.
A) Be a traditional reservist and only do the 1 weekend a month/2 weeks a year gig whilest maintaining a real civilian job.
B) Same as A, but I can also come into work and do what's called Double TP's and get paid for 2 days of work for flying about 4-8 hours.
C) Go on orders which means getting paid daily, going into work rarely, and occasionally getting sent to Germany for 10-days to make an additional $157/day on top of my other pays - not to mention if we go downrange into the AOR we get all our months pay tax free, hazardous duty pay, hostile fire pay, etc...

I'm currently on orders sitting in Spangdahlem, Germany making about $400/day. Base pay + basic allowance for housing/quarters w/dependants rate + flight pay + hostile fire pay + substanance allowance + per diem + hazardous duty pay + no taxes on all of it = beautiful thing.

At 22 it's hard to find another job this damn easy that pays anywhere near this much. Lovin' it!

My father did about 18 years of Active Duty Air Force before switching to the reserves(same squadron as myself). He's a Lt. Colonel(C-17 Pilot). Was prior enlisted doing avionics work on C-141's - before he decided to go to OTS and fly them.;)

The U.S Air force. Nothing beats the feeling of soaring through your own bit of sky at mach 1+ speeds (not to mention the ludicrous g-forces playing on your body).

Not me, I've got a future. But if I were to give up on it or, something went wrong I'd try to get into the Air Force. Or maybe, with this "future" I have I can enter West Point or Annapolis or something.

Maybe the Marines...if I really had nothing to lose...

Not me, I've got a future.

If you're implying that members of the military joined beacuse they didn't have a future, or that they won't have a future for doing so, you've got quite some nerve.

If I ever joined the military, I'd like to into the Air Force or the Navy.

I tried to join the Marines but I blew my right knee out and I was unable to make the physical grade before leaving for boot camp. I'm sort of mixed on whether it was good or not, while I would really have liked to been in the military it seems now is not the time I would really want to be in. If I'm going to be fighting for my country I want to whole heartedly agree with I am fighting for.

If I had to join the military, I'd probably do USAFR or National Guard. The only way I'd go into active duty stuff is if another state was invading our country or we develop Gundams.

No. I'm implying that I have a good shot at something probably safer and at a future life thats less up to chance. No disrespect intended though.

When they retired the F-14 they eliminated the one thing that would ever make me consider joining...

Air Force. I wanted to fly but my vision is not good enough. I am going to college to be an electrical Engineer so i will definately be able to use that if i do join the Air force.

If I were to join a major branch of the military I'd have to choose the USAF. It runs in the family, given that my Grandfather was a fighter pilot during the Korean War (stationed in Alaska), and that I've always had great interest in the different types of equipment we use in war. If I could pick my job, I'd love to fly C-130s doing drops or maybe do the gunship deal where they fire on a target while circling overhead. That being said, I do have a bit of a fear of heights, so its very strange that I'd prefer the Air Force...

Otherwise I'd automatically go with the Coast Guard. It too runs in the family, two of my Uncles serving during the Korean War as well (not like they did much...). If I was able to choose, I'd probably want to protect a major port town like Miami or Long Beach, probably out on the smaller ships that patrol the harbors and whatnot. I do like being out on the water, so I doubt I'd have much of an issue with it.

...Alas, two major problems have and probably will keep me out of the military; I do have a minor heart condition that could cause issues, although a doctor has cleared me of it before. Second, I have an odd collection of veins on the bottom of my right foot, and should I be placed in combat (or any other situation) and something happen to it, the chances of me bleeding to death would presumably be too great for me to be of any good use.

I am currently in the army (basic training) and want to stay there for two or maybe three years as officer candidate.

There is a good chance that I am going to to join up the army or army national guard after college.

I had my heart set on joining the RAF after completing a degree, even to the point that I spent months persuading my mum that it was a good decision and that I wasn't goin in as a bottom level foot soldier.

However, that all proved pointless when I went on a fact finding mission to the Armed Forces carreers office only to find out that because I have been diagnosed with asthma, though rarely and mildly affected, that I was unable to join. I was gutted.

Its a hard choice for me, but I think that I would try the Marines and if I didn't get accepted I would go with the army and after I was in the Army for a year or two I would try and become an Army Ranger. I would also see if I could be a sniper. I don't know why but the thought of being way out of sight with just you and your spotter waiting for your target to appear just appeals to me.

I don't want to be in any of them.

Probably because I'm not American.

For anybody saying that people with no future are the ones in the military, you are wrong. You can go into the military and never touch a gun after basic training. Most people that join the military are people who believe that their future IS to defend their country. I know people who majored in things like teaching, and programing but still joined the military.

So don't think that people only join the military because they have no future.

Those who say military personnel don't have a future are actually the ones who don't have a future, sitting on their asses, getting money from their mothers, and playing arm-chair politics.

I want to join the Air Force to become a pilot. Pilot of what is what I'm still deciding. Can I be a pilot in the Air Force Reserve?

I don't think that is quite what he means, I think what he intended to say, was 'I have my future planned so I have no intention of joining the armed forces, if my planned future fails I could consider joing...' Rather than ' People who join the military have no future'

at least thats the way I read it,

as for me my career plan doesn't involve the military either, but who know's if the UK where to be in danger of invasion, I would propably join the military.

Why would I be a retard for not knowing what USAFR means?

And since when does the voicing of an opinion equal such a derogatory description? I don't like the military, nor would I even consider joining in, yet I consider that those who join are (at times) entering the only opportunity they have for sure.

And, yes, I sit on my ass all day, in front of a Mac, because I'm a designer. I don't get money from my parents and I don't play politics.

Former Squid.
Neither retired nor active duty.
Did my stint from '82 to '86
Saw some stuff, lived to tell sea-stories about it.

It is truly an adventure. I've been places I never could have gone.
Of course, I've also been in a couple of warzones,
was under the shuttle Challenger when it blew, spent several days picking up pieces.
Made history as a member of the crew of the last ship to fire on Beirut in '84.
Had my twentieth birthday, and the obligatory drunken good time that went with that on the French Riveria, during Mardi Gras. From what I remember, it rocked.
But a lot of years have passed since that day.
I am where I am today, doing what I do, because I spent four years in the US Navy.
Granted, it's because the Navy taught me what I didn't want to commit 20-30 years of my life to.

It was a necessary thing for me to go into the military. I don't think I could have gotten away from home, and forced to "grow up" any other way.

I was in the army for about 14 days. :dopey:
