Well I went to Fry's looking at video cards, and I went in there knowing what i wanted the ATI RADEON™ X800 XT Platinum Edition 256MB, well one of the guys that worked there said that NVIDIA's GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB DDR had a slight lead over the Radeon, so my question is, which one should i get, i read some reviews and most of them said that the 6800 is a little better, but on the other hand for some other games the x800 is. Thanks for your help! the games i'll be playing are MOHAA, COD, Mafia, Counter-strike..... if that makes a difference 👍

Hell, if you're only going to be playing those games, All you really need is a 9600XT.

But...In the likely care that you arent, Go for the X800 XT Platnium. 👍

X800XT PE.

6800U has a slight advantage at lower resolutions, however when you crank up the res and start applying AA/AF, the X800XT takes the lead. 👍

Pretty much the only thing that is good about the 6800 Ultra is that they have the SM 3.0(Shader Model) , which is supposed make the 6800 future proof for gaming , because future games will soon use that technology. Though when the X900 Radeon comes out it will definately have SM 3.0. Also the 6800 uses a lot of juice from your PSU, using 2 4-pin molex connectors, they said it is recommended that you have a 480W power supply.
So I'd definately go with the X800 PE. :sly: 👍

Yup i'll be running hi-res for sure, thanks guys. Well the card i wanted from the start will be the card im getting, Now have to wait until Friday :banghead:

x800 platinum here i come!!!!

Not so fast, sp74supra.

I would recommend the 6800 Ultra over the X800 XT. While games like Counter Strike and Medal of Honor won't push even the lowliest entry level cards to the limit, you did list one game that caught my eye. The 6800 Ultra did much better at Call of Duty than the X800 XT in all quality tests done by Tom's Hardware.

I would take a hard look at these benchmarks and others before you plop down the $500+ dollars for these high-end cards. While the X800 XT won overall, the 6800 Ultra was right on the heels of the X800 XT. With the combination of better drivers and support for Pixel Shader 3.0, I recommend the 6800 Ultra.

Drivers being, of course, mostly personal opinion.

ATi's AA/AF quality is better than Nvidias, and their cards handle it better. Older games, such as COD, aren't goint to push either card very much. Or did they come out with a new version?

I'd also keep the X800XT in the game, as ATi has been doing a lot of work on their drivers, giving their cards more and more performance. Their Doom 3 scores, for example, have jumped in excess of 45% in some cases. With this not only being limited to specific applications, but apperently more of a wide spread effort, I'd recomend the ATi. As an example, recently ATi released Cat8.07Beta drivers, improving performance all around, even more.

I don't have preference on ATi vs Nvidia, I prefer whatever is better. 👍

Well this is a tough one, but I read about Nvidia's pixel shader and other goods, and that future games will use that technology. So the 6800 ultra now?, because im going with the AMD Athlon fx -53, and 2 GB of ram so i'll spend the money I saved on not buying the x800 for? Guys you've been helpful thanks. I have to make my decision fast because Friday is the day I get parts for my new gaming machine 👍

My earlier post was a joke, by the way. I would never spend more than $200 on any single computer component, sans the monitor. I would shell out like an MF for a quality monitor. Infact I have, on several occations (:

thats alright 👍 , I'll just decide when i go to Fry's at put the 2 video cards side-by-side and wait until a sales representative tells me his opinion hahah. Problem is they both have their own pros and cons.

You're trying to decide between an NVidia and an ATI? Historically I would have said NVidia, no questions. ATI is teh sux0r, as the kids say. However, in more recent times, NVidia have not been putting forth a quality effort. They've acquired 3D Labs and incorporated some of those designs into their gaming card products. I don't believe this was a wise choice. They need to return to producing cards with sheer raw power instead of trying to be fancy with different technologies.

That doesn't mean I like ATI better than NVidia, though (: I just don't think right now is a good time to be buying video cards.

We just recieved our new PC 2 days ago and have the ATI Radeon X800 SE. I've got no complaints at all about the card. Couldn't wish for better performance and from what I've heard so far, the X800 has the edge over the competition?

I recently got a ATI Radeon 9600Pro, execellent card for it's price. If you're gonna be one of the millions of other who's going to play HL2 solely (that's me) when it comes out then I would recommend the ATI because HL2 has been optimized to work with those cards. Because recently I saw a benchmark on doom3 with at Geforce and ATI (specifics doesn't really matter). The geforce did fantastic while the ATI did horrible. And these were the latest cards. Didn't the guys from Doom3 say that it was going to optimized for GEforce. If this is the same with Half Life 2 then I'd go ATI. That's only if you're a die-hard fan of HL and CS and all that good stuff.

Yeah, well i should say the games ill be playing are like battlefield, flight simulator, and other ww2 games, so i'll just go with the ati x800 i guess. Thanks for your opinions and help 👍
