today i was discussing with my friends about cars, i told them that fiat was the owner of ferrari, and volkswagen of audi..., i know this since 2002, but i dont know wich are "today" the big fishes of cars, but even with that my friends say that i was totally wrong, ferrari owns fiat, and audi doesnt belong to VW.

could somebody give me an update of this info.

[rant]I know VW owns Bugatti, which takes 95% of the beauty and majesty away from the Veyron. VW just bought Bugatti so they could call the Veyron a "Bugatti" even though at the time Bugatti was just an empty shell of a company with rich heritage back in the 1930s. So really, the Bugatti Veyron is actually a Volkswagen Veyron :yuck: made with millions of VW's money and all of VW's best engineers. [/rant]

Fiat owns Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, and Maserati. VW auto group consists of VW, Audi, Porsche, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Bentley, Skoda, and SEAT. VW and Audi have been one company since the thirties when the Auto Union was formed.
 
Fiat is also on it's way to owning a lot of Chrysler.

I believe Vauxhall, Opel and Holden are in with GM.

BMW - Mini and Rolls Royce.

I'm sure there are way more
 
Interestingly, Japan has seven relatively large independent automakers.
 
General Motors also owns Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Opel, Vauxhall, Holden, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Hummer, Daewoo, Saab, Lotus, and Saturn.

Porsche is not really in the VW/Audi group. Porsche used to own 51% of VW until a year or 2 ago, when VW took it back and owned Porsche for 49%.

"On 28 October 2008, Porsche announced that they effectively held over 74 percent; 42.6 percent actual shares, and the rest as convertible options."

Pretty interesting how things changed in the last few years. Also, the VAG group now owns Scania and MAN for over 50%.

Toyota owns Daihatsu

Ford never owned Mazda, the most they ever had was a 33% share. Ford now has a 3% stake in the company, but does technology sharing on some projects.

The first two are independent. Skoda is owned by Volkswagen and Peugeot is partnered with Citroen. I'm not sure what TVR's status is.

BMW owns the rights to the Triumph car division (defunct), but Triumph bikes (operational) are now a completely seperate company, not owned by BMW.

In addition...

MG (operational) are owned by SAIC, who also own the rights to Morris (defunct), Austin (defunct) and Maxus (a renamed LDV).

The Rover (defunct) nameplate belongs to Jaguar-Land-Rover.

Infiniti are owned (and created) by Nissan. SAAB is still alive (just), the company itself are owned by Swedish Automobile (formerly Spyker) and the SAAB name is owned by SAAB aerospace A.B.
 
Yeah, but haven't Saabs workers been laid off and factories and production lines down?

As I recall, the owners of Spyker purchased Saab, and then sold Spyker to outside investors. I'm guessing that they now regret that decision...

Pagani and TVR remain independent companies, for the time being. The TVR brand switched hands again a year or two ago as I recall, and it sounds as though they want to start building cars again.

Skoda is operated by Volkswagen, and makes most of their money selling second-hand Audis. Peugeot is a part of the Peugeot-Citroen alliance, basically selling the same vehicles between them, several based on Toyotas and Mitsubishis.

Spyker, as mentioned above, was independent... And still is... But recently traded hands and is no longer associated with Saab.

If I'm not mistaken, Rover is now referred to as Rowe under the MG brand, correct? Those guys at SAIC are awfully clever.

I know... sad that so much of GM went under. 👎

Especially Olds and Pontiac - our family had four Oldsmobiles (an '86 Cutlass Ciera, an '88 Delta 88, a '94 Delta 88 Royale, and a '97 Delta 88 LSS). After we parted ways with the LSS in 2007, we bought a 2002 Pontiac Bonneville, thinking that Pontiac would be a safe bet. Low and behold, we were wrong again!* So you can excuse me for maybe being a bit apprehensive when my parents replaced the Bonneville with a Cadillac CTS! :scared:

* Orphan cars don't bother me though - I ended up with that Bonneville and absolutely love it.
