Who pays attention to the recommended gear?

I'm having faster laptime without the recommended gear to slow me down. The gear it recommend is never accurate.

it really helped me. in an online race we were driving around tsukuba. on the final turn i payed attention to the gear changer and lowered my speed and gear. literally everyone else went into the sand pit! XD then the host ragequitted. T_T

sounds like the host was disconnected causing it to look like the cars went out of control into the sand trap, happens sometimes and usually causes a WTF moment haha.

yep I have a 50" plasma and i can see the recommended gear but I'm usually braver than that if I'm using abs 1 I do watch the shift light though because I use hood cam or roof cam which ever it is, i go from the sounds and know after a lap or 2 on a new track which gear for which corner in a strange car.

I pay to much thought to it at times. For that very reason I shut it off.

I just shut it off tonight, I need to learn the tracks better by using real brake points rather than having it assist and relying on it. As for what gear it recommends, no, it's usually wrong.

I turned it off. I use Automatic.

Ever since it first appeared in GT3 or GT2 or GT1 i've pretty much never paid any attention to it, and have since turned it off in GT5.

If i want to go around some twistys while destroying the speed limiter in first gear, i'll do it thank you very much, I won't change to third gear like you reccommend, you silly game. ;)

I refer to it all the time. Though at times I down shift one gear less if im familiar with the track.

👍

Listening to the revs of the engine and physical breaking points do me fine. I often found it was telling me to change down a gear before the true breaking point. This would fool me into thinking I needed to break when the breaking point was further down the track, resulting in slower lap times. I even went as far as to cover it up with blue-tac before there was an option to turn it off.

I started to use it in GT3 and now when this option allows to turn it off, I turned it off. On some tracks I have to find braking points and get orientated by surroundings but it's much better and natural for me now. It's welcomed option for me.

Ever since yesterday I found out what the red gear number meant. ever since i've been following it ive shaved several seconds off of lap times. so. hae you ever noticed it but never cared much for it, or youv'e noticed it for a while and used it?

I find it to be 90-95% accurate, it usually misses 1 or 2 corners (for me) of a circut, but sometimes 3, sometimes none. So I do use it, and I find it a remarkably good way to work without a driving line if I'm forced not to use one.

What is that? Just being silly. To answer your question no I don't pay attention to it.

Before patch 2.02 many people had problems with the indicator because they ended up noticing it blinking when approaching corners even if they didn't want to, affecting their driving skills by, for example, hampering proper learning of braking points. I opened a thread about this some time ago:

I use it as a guide. A bit much to be honest. It's something that has been fused into my mind since GT3 and I have a hard time driving without it sadly.

Without it I dont no what to do. I have been always using it helped me alot.

Used to rely on it pretty heavily, not for exact braking points (because most of the time it's just wrong if you want to go fast), but as a marker for braking points - so for example I'd learn for a certain corner to brake about a second after it lights up. Didn't like having it rely on it though - and it always seemed to catch my eye, even when I was trying not to look at it - so now I just have it turned off.

I use it as a guide only in tracks I'm not driving on often. On the Nurburgring, I know the speeds necessary for every corner.

I used it when I first got used to GT4, I only use it on GT5 when driving a new custom track.

I wonder if this is where the AI change gear?
That would explain a lot.

My brother pointed it out to me back in GT3. I've been using it ever since except recently during one the updates. Now I turn off the HUD completely and use the driving line when practicing or learning a track

I never use it, I just listen to the engine. That works for me most of the time XD

In time trials it appears that the fastest ones are using recommended gear +1; means GT suggest 3rd gear, they use 4th and so on...

I use it, sometimes i dont pay much of attention to it. But without it, i dont know, i can't play like i play with it, but for example on Dirt 2, Dirt 3 these feature does not exist and im happy with it and i play well. In GT5 i got that fealing that i need to play with it to be more fast and precise on the turns.

I turned it off and it's taking some getting used to. Mostly because I'm trained for the blinking to tell me when it's time to brake. I'd get used to it and adjust my braking points a bit after that.

I'm training myself again by doing some of the first A-spec races in slower cars.

I think a few peoples are getting confused what OP is referring to.

My subconscious uses it to learn tracks. Once I learn exact braking markers, I stop needing/using it.
The real difficulty in turning it off, is being used to it not being off, because I always take mental note of how long it flashes. It may even help trigger my brain into looking for the braking marker at times.:dopey:

I have it on, but I only really pay attention to when I get to a completely new track to me (read user generated tracks). Otherwise, Im normally breaking a second later then when it pops up, and at least a gear higher then it tells me to be in.
