I consider myself an ok driver, but I've never had the opportunity to try and drift a car in real life. (always owned FWD) hopefully I will soon... Anyone here do the transition from GT drifting to the real thing... howd you find it?

Well i would'nt call this drifting but i got the back end out on my mates BMW M3 comming round a long bend in Glencoe the highlands
it was'nt intentional ...As i was driving along (80mph) on a nice sunny day the road suddenly became damp and i lost control of the car ..
The back end was dancing all over the road and the last thing i needed to to was hit the brakes because there was a 150ft drop just a the side of the road ..
So i opted for to just try and ride it out and regain control of the car
I battled with the car for about 30 or so seconds but it did seem longer as everything was going in slow mo ..And i managed to regain control
All of my mates in the car reacted well to the situation they just held their breath and hoped that i would get them out of this alive (which i did thankfully)..But if anyone one of them had screamed im sure it would have turned out very different..

I was flamed by loads of people for that incident for months afterwards accused of being wreckless and totaly disregarding my friends life's..

But none of my friends seen it that way i guess you had to have been there.. But they all Commemded me for the true skill and level headedness to have been able to get out of that situation..

I will be more careful in the future..

If i was to try and drift a car for real i would do it on a track of an airfield with supervision of course..

Ye, The best place would be in a controlled environment.
I think driving games def improve your reaction in a situation you otherwise would know nothing about... like your mountain example.

yep totaly ...Im thinking of doing my advanced driving course ( the ones the police etc do)
After an incident like that it has really opened my eyes ..I just want to be prepared if there ever is a next time ..Hope not though..

BTW welcome to GTplanet :)

I did an advanced course back home, helped alot, also did a few track days, and a Ferrari experience here. if theres one thing that I realise (took me a while) is that if your a "good" driver, to be a better driver, you need to look ahead. Doesnt sound important, but I personally think its one of the things that will improve anyones driving 10 fold.

do the course, you wont regret it, simple things like braking, proper use of steering etc... could save your life, and make you a better drifter! :)

Thats the way i see it too there is allways room for improvement..
The incident in Glencoe was just blind luck that it was not more serious ..

Aye those track days look cool you get to drive rally cars and formula fords etc i would love to try that out some time ..It cost's around £300 for the entire weekend ..Maybe i will start hinting to my GF to hook me up for my birthday which is not to far away now :D

do that. if she does sort you out, shes a keeper!
the Ferrari exp was on special for 150 pounds, drovea 329gtb and 360 Modena,. Wot an experience.
Tyring to get into motorsport myself, but its so damn expensive! thanks for the welcome, great forum!

Indeed if she sort's that out i will ask her to marry me there and then :D

One of my mates is getting into rally driving he's a Paramedic so he know's how to handle a vehicle..

He bought a opel manta GTE which he is starting to strip down and soup it up fo racing ..
Can't wait to see this beast when it's finnished..

Thats another reason i want to do the course He promised me i could drive the car or he could help me find my own setup and help me build it..

It's just the money and the time you need to put into it taking on a hobbie like that..

But we will see :)

I say go for it man, I'm planning to run a car in the Uk rally end of the year, just for fun! should be interesting, just buy a banger and pop in a cage!
AND, if you guys crash, u wont have to wait for the medics! :P
so wot do you drive at the mo?
Which M3 was it btw, Ive driven the e36, WOT A CAR, but not the new one yet.

I've got a bog standard golf diesel estate nothing fancy .

The M3 was a E46 Black 2 door version (what a car ) My friend is a bit of a snob he wants to get a AMG SL 55 now a wee bit more expensive than the M3:lol:
Aye it will sure be handy having a Paramedic as a co driver

e46, EEEEIIIISSSSH! serious piece of kit mate! I dont like the sl55, pose mobile, I mean, clarcksons got one damnit!
I drive the 345, the bus not the car! havent hda a car since I left home! 9 months ago. sad I tell ya.
had slightly modded MK2 GTI. man I miss that car.
are pace notes easy to read btw?

Yup, I did try to drift a few times in my life. Once I tried in my cousins 240 sx, I don't even know why i did it, i mean there is no way i could have pulled it off... i guess i just stoped thinking at the time. Anyways I did a small feint and dropped the rear wheels into the dirt got sidways and then i think what happend was, i got scared and let go of the gas. the rear wheels grabed and the car swung back the other way since i was countersteering too much. I then swung the car back into the other direction and we skided to a stop sideways in the middle of the street. Probably one of the stupidest things i have ever done. I felt so bad cus i almost wrecked my cousins car. After that i promised myself never to try anything that stupid on the road again.

It sure was a nice car to drive im so glad i did'nt wreck it that time he said "anytime you need to borrow it you got" it :D

Those GTi are great wee cars for flinging about i had a old B reg one my second car drove it into the ground though (engine blew up )

Im still trying to learn how to read pace notes most of them just seem like jibberish to me ..
But i think my playing Colin Mcrae 3 will help remedy that problem:lol:

Aye the SL 55 AMG is in the top ten most gayest cars in the world  But if i had that amount of money to spend on a car i would go for a Aston or a TVR

It was in my brother's car and we were coming down an on ramp to the freeway when he speed up and truned hard and we were in feint motion for like 5 secz. thats the closest ive been to drifting, and his car is FF

drifing in real life is amazing. I got a Jeep cherokee and everytime it snows I'm out all day whippin her sideways around corners, never crashed! It's a lot of fun and not as hard as you think, once you learn how your car recovers you're strait.

I don't 'drift' on the road - too dangerous, plus it's near impossible with AWD - but I do like sideways motoring on dirt, especially since it's so easy in the Subaru.

damn it, once again its like being caught with my pants down, i am one of the only, well feels like and seems like the i am the only fwd drifter in the usa. i can push harder and go faster than anyone from the south central wisconsin area and if your interested in a fun day of driving hit me up with an email, i am always looking forward to someone wiht at least half the skill as me to come run with me through the corners.

man the other day i was flying, well crusing at about 85mph down this nice streth of raod known as county road J. it comes into a nice slightly downhill right into a 4 way intersection, so as i am comeing into this intersection i have no room for error, so i am pushing all the way to the right and just toss it back to the left and let it fly, wow, so much smoke it was sick, when you are braking form 85 on the right hander to make the left at the intersection my front left tire and my rear left are taking the load so i throw into the left hand corner and i felt my shocks hit the bump stops (small peice of rubber preventing shock damage in extreme situations ie. bottoming out) well i hit bumpstops and the car slides down the road for about 45 feet into this almost hairpin corner and i let loose in 2nd gear and go tearing off down the road, the blackmarks i left look like that of a fatal accident or something, there was like a jun supra amount of smoke, i just got new tires, goodyear viva 2's, really nice drift tire for the wet.

someone else post an experience.

anyone wanna hear more start a post called Drifter Stories Wanted. i will post for hours about my close calls and such.

i do!!! but u want me to start a new thread? this seems like a good a place as any to post stories about real life drifting

as for the SL 55 comments from people earlier on, at first thought, u think hmmm another one of these merc amg's that talk about hp and modifications but are so tame they aren't worth driving. well i haven't driven one yet, but there are a number of them cruising around my school and when one of those drivers floors it, it sounds like a ww2 fighter plane (just like clarkson said) yeah i know he's got one, but there are some well gay people who have other cars but i dont care cause i'll buy them anyway.

actually the sl55 sounds more like a cross between a harley and tvr grififth :P an interesting mix, but one to die for.

as for drifting, i was sliding around go karts about 10 years ago, long before i knew what drifting was. it wasn't proper drifting, but as close as i've been. my real car is ff, and old, i tried pulling the hand brake whilst turning off main roads (very interesting :D) but sadly little drift. understeer doesn't seem all that uninteresting however, u can have a little fun with just braking strongly in the wet and flooring the accelerator.

went karting a few weeks ago outdoor in the wet, the best drifting I've ever done, corner to corner slides. LURID SLIDES out of fast sweeps, until I crashed... HARD... :)

yeah karts rule. but i crashed too. whilst our karts were being refueled i told my friends about this new "technique" i learned of sliding around (i didnt know its was drifting then heh) and so they started to try it, but they were pretty lame.

at the end of the longest straight i braked hard and was in a full slide, and my m8 in front of me was also trying to slide, we were in a parallel drift for a second and then to my horror he did a spin and stopped right in the middle of the track whilst i was still sliding. BANG! :D pretty intense hit but nothing was broken and we just carried on.

love it

funny how I think I've always like cars better sideways, from first reading about the Midnight club in Japan when I was 12 (I couldnt believe it)!!
Now I'm trying to get into racing, and then from there buy a 200sx or summing and get into some really hardcore dori dori drifting!!!

went to a friendly karting event, and in one of the heats I was leading, this kid who races karts(i think his dad runs the place) was at the end of the straight as I came around the corner in an already full on opposite lock(admitedly there was no more steering left and I was kinda praying I could hold it) and the look on his face as he pointed it out to his friend.... reminds me of how I used to be... drifters are born drifters if you ask me! :)

Don't mention Karting to me

It was about 8 years ago (my 20th birthday) me and 7 friends went down to spain for three weeks

We done all the normal guy stuff :D ..
one day we where passing through this small village near Rhonda and we noticed a outdoor gokarting track..
We couldn't resist having a go (only cost like a fiver for 30mins) it was great..

But the owner of the track had to shell out a fortune to fix them all back up because the time we had finnished all of the Karts where wrecked ..
It was more like a Destruction derby than Kart racing:lol:

The engine fell off one when one of my mates slammed into the back of another  wheels fell off others it was so funny
And amazingly the owner did not mind what was happening he just laughed his head off watching us he even bought us all drinks afterwards..such a cool guy..

In the end though we all mucked in to help him get all his Karts running again..
if that had been anywhere here we would probably have to shell out for the damage to the karts:lol:

btw diablo, when u refer to 'the midnight club' u saw when u were 12, was that in a top gear magazine by any chance? cause i distinctly remember a blue car (i think it was an rx-7) with 'midnight racing team' written on the window. and i thought being in a racing team must be the coolest thing in the WORLD! :D

(i still have that magazine)
