"Why" are some races "better"?

So I just did the Peugeot 206 Manufacturer's race and it was probably the closest, most enjoyable series I've done, at least in awhile. Maybe I just had the mods on my car matched right, but the AI was right there most of the time, even fighting back, not just dying after I passed them. Usually, in a so-called even series I can get a gap pretty easily, but this was great. Why can't they all be like this? I wish DTM, JGTC, etc. were the same . . . maybe someone will come up with hacks to make the AI better in GT4, like GTPupil and others had in GT2.

It's just a matter of figuring out how much power & parts to give yourself. What you're describing is close racing...I do it all the time even in GT4. The Ai's power is usually limited to whatever the game programmers gave the cars for each race. I think in the 206 races perhaps all the cars have the same power, which makes them stick together. 👍

I have also noticed that. The first time I raced in that series I had a heavily modified 206 RC and wasn't even able to build up more than a five secongd lead. Other races of the same level and general idea I could pull out a fifteen to twenty second lead. I also noticed that if I drag race another 206 from that series even with a NA tune up stage 3 I could barely pull on it in a straight line. For some weird reason they not only made the AI drive better in that series, but the cars seem to be modded as well.

How about a turbo eg6_dude? I recall that a peugeot (a.k.a. piglet) can get a turbo stage 3. Maybe that will help. It gives more HP.

Greetings Good Chollo,
An astute observation, and excellent question. I was willing to believe, albeit falsely, that my immeasurable driving skills were the reason for my most excellent times, and numerous victories. But, alas and alack, 'tis not the case. The AI is indeed lacking in most races. I find my challenge comes from endeavoring to at least lap the competition once in any given contest. One challenge that I found to my liking, not only for the level of competition, but for the type of car as well, is the Lotus Elise series.
An extremely aggressive field that is not afraid to trade paint, as well as an interesting group of venues. I had in fact, become so used to winning this type of event, that I found myself somewhat irritated at having to work so hard. Spoiled rotter that I am. It actually took three attempts to achieve total victory, but I must say greatly entertaining.
So I say take the good with the bad, for life is too short to worry over much!
Foot to the floor Good Chollo! Brakes are for pansies!
Yours Quickly

I never said I lost or having a problem! I was just stating that those AI cars were faster than other AI cars I have come across in the past. I have never lost a single race in that series ever. But, thanks for the help anyways. 👍

I also noticed that the Speedsters were pretty quick too, just to throw another race out there. I found that I had to do some modding, but the more mods I put on my car, the faster the AI went.:odd:

Yeah, philly, the Speedsters were another manufacturer race that was just as good. So what do we have here, one programmer on the team doing a better job? No matter, I'm just happy to find 'em when I do!

Understeering pig + 150 BHP ≠ Balanced car. I just used the 206 Rally Car. I think it was stock.

A look at the race demonstration explains it.
I personally miss the rubber band AI of GT3, because, while I realise it was still bad AI, it still made the majority of the races challenging without you forcing them to be.

What does It explain? And i remember GT3 the races were always fairly close, not like GT4 now.

Good idea, but who wants to spend 750,000Cr on a rally car to use on a street? It makes for NO CHALLENGE at all.

Understeering pig...

It was pretty challenging when the normal looking street Peugoets began outrunning me down every straightaway. Besides, I then used the rally car for other races. Either way, its not like money is hard to come by in GT4.

Why the races are so close. If I recall correctly, the AI cars in the Speedster race have more BHP than you can possibly get in the game with either Speedster. This is shown when you watch a demonstration of the race.

Rubber band AI is disabled in GT4. I think the AI in itself is more or less the same, but they turned off the rubber band part of it (like in GT3 endurance races).

What's RubberBand A.I.? (I know A.I. but not the RubberBand part.)

I agree, TuneRVisioN, my whole point was it was CHALLENGING and FUN. I probably spend too much time doing it, but I love to use '60s and '70s cars to beat newer models. Had a blast racing Citta di Aria Normal in an Alfa GTA 1600. It took a few tries, but I got around the '03(?) EVO and won. Much better than leading into the first turn and just watching the lead grow.

Imagine your car is a peg with a rubber-band around it, and the opponents are also pegs, but with YOUR rubber band, if you go really fast, they will pull up behind you because the rubber-band is springy.

Ohh... I get it now... That is why it's harder to relap in GT3 I guess... They need the rubberband A.I. back for more close races.

It still was challenging and fun, because the Peugoet road cars could still outrun you down the straight bits.

No matter how overpowered your car is or how unfair you are being, the AI is still right behind you giving you good races. Shown best in the muscle car cup in GT2.

Chevelle SS454 + Racing Tranny at Le Sarthe, Family Cup level 6.
Alternatively, Camaro Z28 302 @ SSR5, Family Cup level 7.

No. They need competent AI. Like in the TOCA series or Viper Racing. Rubber Band AI is only good if you are too lazy to program good AI.

Apology due, Toronado--I just assumed that the rally car would've made it a cakewalk, like usual. I guess that's just further proof of how good the race is! And I'm ordering TOCA asap, I've heard so much good about it, thanks.

There is a Codebreaker Cheat, to make AI dumb, i havent tried it yet, but would it be possible to make them smarter too???

Is there a "mensa program for AI drivers"??? 💡

...we really don't need dumber AI....

What do they do, forget to turn? Think the brake pedal is the gas? The AI would actually have to be pretty smart to find a way to be any dumber.

I've tried it on Gameshark. They essentially don't do anything. No brakes, no throttle, no sterring. Makes for some comical situtations, as they do do normal things in rolling starts until the race officialy starts.
