Why are wheelstands and cockpits so $$$

That last part is mainly because the weight/size that your cockpit takes up on the plane/boat/train/truck could be used for other goods that pay that much for the space, plus a little extra for giving you the privilege of course, a bit of fuel costs, but mainly, these shipments are happening anyways whether your cockpit/wheel is on it or not so its competition between companies that can charge whatever they want because someone somewhere will need **** delivered.

The more I read this thread, the more it makes me wanna start my own little company for racing stands.

much lower price but it will take longer to get to your front door.

It could be a decent side business actually. You got some folks selling pretty flimsy, unpainted, pvc pipe ones on eBay for like 150-200 USD.

Would have to be a "sell as you finish making them", not a take orders kind of shop I assume.

I first built mine out of wood, but I will be welding a frame together some time soon.

yes sir....fabbed mine up out of aluminum and tig welded it together. may try and sell a few

will get some pics up when I find a suitable factory bucket seat or break down and buy a new race seat off e-bay

Not trying to talk your rig design down, but there is NO way that's solid as a rock. With strong FFB and muscleing the wheel back and forth, there has gotta be some movement and flex. It takes quite alot of material strength to achieve rock solid chassis.

Good job m8 looks solid enough, better than spending $400 on some stupid cockpit with some redbull stickers on the side. Unless you have money to burn or you enjoy doing abit of DIY there is no need to have a crazy cockpit or a racing seat, It doesn't make you faster or drive better so whats the point ? ..... It looks good ?...... your racing online no one will see you...... If you really want it to be as close to driving a car why don't you buy a car chassis and put it in your living room ........fugde me LOL

With the sand in the base for weight and the rubber no slips its very solid. Actually it felt even more solid then my one friends seat/steal wheel setup.

Granted the DFGT wheel doesnt have the "kick" some wheels do. For the DFGT no issues:tup:

For sure, a simple but functional cockpit will be better than clamping the wheel to a table and having crappy seating position. But some people DO want something that actually looks good in their room. You can either buy a sweet looking cockpit or build one. I've been using my simple yet sturdy set-up from wood that is mounted to a heavy coffe table and my seat is a comfortable chair that I took the legs off and mounted to a wood frame at the right angle.

But, over the winter my plan is to put together a rather complex cockpit using a complete interior from 95 Altima that I already removed from a car that I used to drive. Both interior and exterior rigity design and esthetics is going to be of highest importance so it can sit in the living room and actually be a piece of art. It's gonna be completely built from wood and pretty much have a permanent spot. This along with perfectly placed audio set-up/ buttkicker/maybe tactile and triple monitors. Should be sweet!

Just go to a junk yard and pick up a seat (just make sure there are windows and they are up in the car, or the seat will have mold)

I might do this, when ever I do mine (I have work and college, and a project car I'm working on), and have measurements and everything on paper. I just might start building some on the side, 50-50 right now.

Thats what I did. 91 or 93 Prelude seat...super comfy. Oh...also make sure they dont have blood on them. Seriously...I learned that lesson.
 
On Top Gear over here they did a forensic test of substances found in old cars; blood was the least offensive substance found!
