why cant car sounds be the same as garage?

Hi,

Just wandering why the car sounds are quite bad on the track but when you select your car in the garage it sounds amazing.....why couldn't they use that sound? Particularly like the gt350 and mustang boss they sound deep and like a roar but on the track it's like a vacuum cleaner?

Just curious as they appear to have the sound just not implementing it on the track???

P.s I did a search for similar threads as I know the sound is heavily criticised on the this game but didn't see any, if there is then mods feel free to point me in the right direction and close this :-).

Car Sound on Track: Recorded on a Dynapack. The "Vacuum" sound you're probably hearing is the transmission. The thing is that they didn't enhance the sound to make it sound more aggressive, all original...
 
Yes - Convergent is spot on - the garage sound is the engine starting up in neutral.

They alter the pitch of their sound sample to simulate an increase or decrease in revs, but this produces a very unrealistic sound - they need to use multiple samples recorded at different revs. They also use short samples so on some cars you get an unrealistic repeated rhythmic effect - it really needs to be a series of longer samples stitched together. There's also no "snap crackle and pop" i.e. over-run sounds - extra samples need to be added for this. Plus we have race exhausts such as the one on the E Type Jaguar which switches the car from a 6 cylinder to a 4 cylinder sound.

Thankfully some new cars have good sounds such as the Senna 97T and F3 car. I know there are many threads on this already, but it is very frustrating that PD are so slow to respond on this. In my view they should ask the manufacturers for help - all the major manufacturers and sports car makers use equipment much more sophisticated than a "Dynapack" to fine tune their induction and exhaust sounds. They use custom built anechoic chambers. As the manufacturers have all this sound data why don't PD partner with them on it?

Sounds when accelerating in real life are under load, but PD recorded them with the cars in neutral. That's why it sounds weak. If you read the pitstop blog they're starting to record new cars under load as well. But obviously it's gonna take a while to replace all 1200 car sounds with the new method.

At the end of the day it comes down to the same problem: PD just doesn't have enough employees for the scope of project that they have.

That's why they need to partner with the manufacturers and get sound data from them.
