After looking around with no real answer to why G27s rattle I just completely took apart my wheel after it rattling pretty much since i got it about two years ago. The problem is where the splines from the wheel shaft meet the plastic guide that sits on basically a plastic rail does not sit right, there is a small gap so it has a little room to move back and forth as the teeth on the end of the shaft meet the teeth on the guide to makes it go side to side with steering. I can't really see away to fix it other than adding a permanent shim or by plastic welding some kind of flat piece to make it fit more snug.. or something sketchy like that to make it a little more tight. Doesn't seem like anything will mess up, and there are no signs of chewing on any splines even with it being loose and rattling so I don't know what to do if anything for a fix but at least i figured out what was up with my wheel and if this is everyone's problem it's not much worse than the noise it makes.
It seems as if they made it like that on purpose to not be snug enough to not effect how smooth it turns, but didn't realize how noisy it would actually get once it is worn in and the grease has moved around.
Edit round 2: I found it by opening it up down to the mechanism and turned it manually with my hand to watch the guide and am positive that is the rattling and the clunking is when it gets to the end of the rail or if you're on an off road course or rough part of a track its just jumping around that much more from all the bumps with force feedback. It also pretty much jumps to a stop from not fitting as snug as it should when it gets to the end of the guide and is done turning. No camera at the moment but if i can come across one by the time i get my new shifter and need it back together I'll post pictures.
Sorry if this post is all sorts of confusing and repetitive, just want to let everyone know what I found after not being able to find any real answer from someone that has actually opened one up.
