My personal opinion on car alarms is that they're a waste of money - they don't work, and they're an inconsiderate annoyance to people who live near them when they go off. The best money you can spend is on a very good immobiliser, and make sure you don't leave anything interesting on display inside your car.

A case in point: with study, buying a house worth the thick end of $1 million Australian, work and so on, sleep has been at somewhat of a premium this week. I'm very tired and need rest.

And so, at 11.20pm, I'm watching the British Open rather than sleeping. Why? Because some arsehole's car alarm has been going for FOUR HOURS. I've called the police - there's nothing they can do except try and contact the owner.

And what is the alarm on - some crapheap 1995 base model Mitsubishi Magna wagon - the last thing any self respecting joy rider would steal. If I had a tow truck that thing would be sitting in about thirty feet of water somewhere in Sydney Harbour.

On my previous cars which I've had alarms installed on, I had it where the alarm siren would automatically turn off after 1 minute of going off. I'll agree alarms are pretty much useless nowadays though. Nobody pays attention to them 'cause they're constantly going off for no reason, and I never paid attention to mine when it went off.:p

I have an alarm on my current car, but it came with it. If the windows are down, and someone tries to open the door anyway without using the keyless entry, the door handles slam shut, and the windows roll up 'bout 5 times faster than normal.:D It also honks really loud and flashes the lights for 30 seconds. It'll also honk/flash lights if it's messed with in any way.

I just spoke to some neighbours - it's been going for five and a half hours - it goes for about 30 seconds, stops for ten seconds, then starts up again. I tried to convince them to break in, put it in neutral, and push it into the harbour, but no-one would be in it.

Don't you have Tracker in Australia? Now that's a good system.

The thing is, if the scrote wants your car, he's gonna get it. So, what do you do? You do whatever the insurance company wants you to do to get the biggest discount on your premium!

As an aside, I saw someone driving along in an A-Class with the alarm going off. I was like

How about breaking in, popping the bonnet, and going snip snip snip in the engine bay? Keep snipping till the ****ing thing shuts up, and maybe get the odd HT lead on the way.

Not that I'm advocating breaking in, vandalism, or other such acts of mindless destruction and illegality!

lol.

BTW, I've wondered for years now why car manufacturers still use car alarms. When one goes off, no one instantly turns their head to see if a car is being stolen. They're pointless... An immobiliser would be better.

Hmmm...both of my cars have them, and I've never used it before.

The best 'alarm' is to lock your doors and roll up your windows when you're parked.

I like mine it turns off after a minute, and then if I go to unlock it it beeps a "code" to tell me it had gone off/someone had been messing with it.
