I heard people talking about people saying a wheel is better and a DS3 is impossible to get gold with, but with a DS3 i completed Monza on bronze, but I'm unable to do a half lap with a wheel.

Wheels are faster when you master them.

With a DS3 you either have 0 for no steering or 1 for max steering on the D-Pad, or -12°~12°+ or angle with the analog sticks to use on steering.

With a wheel you can have -90°~90°+ or -450°~450°+(900° wheel) of rotation so you can be more precise with steering.

I can be more precise with a wheel, that's why I prefer it.

You just need to practice, once you learn how to drive that car with a wheel you'll be blowing your old lap times into smithereens :D

If you are like most of us that has played Grand Turismo since GT1 and have always used a controller than finally got a wheel your lap times are going to be faster with the controller untill you have put in time with the wheel. Getting a wheel does not = automatically going faster like most people think.
It usually takes a couple of weeks with a wheel to get to where you can do the same laps times as you now do with the controller. Just stick with the wheel and get used to it and you will never go back to a controller. GT5 is way more fun using a wheel.

Personally i think it's all down to each persons abilities and skill, I was unable to do much on these events with a ds3, I just wasn't good enough with it, smoothness (and lightning reactions) are critical to mastering the red bull, and with a ds3 I just couldn't get to a competitive standard, but now I've got a dfgt, after a few runs I'd bronzed them all, and hoping to gold them once I've got more practice in. But a lot of people have said it's doable with ds3, hats off to them I say!

Other than the steering, I think the wheel has advantages in terms of the acceleration and braking too (correct me if I'm wrong, never used a wheel before :guilty:). With the DS3 it's just buttons, either you press it or don't and you have to adjust to that.

you cannot steer 30% to the left then immediately steer 50% to the right with a controller....

With a controller you don't have to go round, so

But that's why you have to get used to the wheel so you can master it. If you've seen the time trial rankings you'll know that the top competitors are always using 900 degree steering wheels, so if you can learn the wheel (and not break it driving the X2010/1 ) then you'll be halfway there.

Why is a wheel better for X2010 challenge?

Because I haven't been able to gold this challenge with my DS3.

Obviously, that is because wheels are better than :yuck: DS3's.

or maybe I suck with the X2010 :guilty:

The steering is touch sensitive and so is the gas and brake buttons so I beg to differ, you can it's just ten times harder with a controller. New controller sensitivity makes this a little easier but not by much at all.

Best lap time for DS3 controller on Suzuka is a 1:06.9xx and so far I have not been able to pull off 2 perfect lap times. I have only spent about 2 weeks on it.

I will pull a 28.9 to 29.1 on the first sector, 53.9 to 54.2 on the second sector and then the 1:06.9, but always mess up on the second lap. Any pointers would help! This is on a good day.

The best two laps I have done is 2:14.089. I have a silver in Monza and I am off by .69 so I am not too concerned about that, but the Suzuka is killing me!!! I haven't even really tried on the Nring yet :(

Don't really want to spend $$$ on a wheel and seat when I only need the golds on vettel and 2 other trophies to get a plat.

Thanks!

Interesting question, actually. I have a G27 and I don't dare use it when I drive the X2010/FGT because there is a worrying knocking noise coming from the motor.

The rally events and the formula type cars (F10, F2007, FGT, X1) seem to be very rough on wheels, wheels are certaintly faster though simply from being able to be smoother in every aspect.

I think the pedals are a huge help. With the X2010, throttle control is very important.

If you look at the top drivers on any of the time trials online, you'll see wheel users. The wheel offers more precision in turning and more throttle control.

If you look at the top drivers on any of the drift trials online, you'll see DS3 users. The DS3 offers faster lock to lock time (wheels have to unwind and risk snap oversteer in the other direction).

Good to see another DS3 comrade! stiorevo here are my suggestions:
- Try beating Monza first, it's the easiest of the three. If you can't gold Monza yet, then Nurburgring and Suzuka is gonna be hella tough.
* Unless you're doing it as a challenge by tackling the hardest first, then the rest would be easy.
- As for Suzuka try to get the 1st lap under 1:06. And for the sector times aim for under 29.0 and 53.0. Any faster and you would be well on your way for gold.
- Watch gold replays on youtube (follow their driving options) if it helps. Mine are here if you're interested.
- Turn off ghost car or the HUD altogether if you feel they're distracting you and making you mess up.
- Experiment with ABS1 and ABS10.

I don't think this challenge requires lightning quick reflexes! I am 57 years old and have golded all three tracks now and my reflexes are far from lightning quick anymore! I use a wheel and just ran lap after lap after lap. Well actually it was part of lap after part of lap after part of lap ...... until I finally mastered it. I use a wheel (logitech gt pro 900 degree) and my split times on lap 1 were around 28.5, 52.5, 105.4. Remember, the lower the first lap, the less you have to work on the 2nd lap (although I wouldn't recomend changing your style or slowing down any, just keep the rythm going as your 2nd lap will naturally be less than the 1st).

A 106.9 on the first lap means you'll have to run a 103.1 on your 2nd lap to gold at Suzuka. A low to mid 104 is doable but a 103.1 is going to be really tough! Try to get your first lap below 106 into the 105 something.

I found myself having great laps until I hit the chicane, then I could see the gap between Vettel and me widen so I knew that was where I was loosing the most time. I would keep the ghost up on screen until I got good enough to get real close. Once I got that good, I would turn him off as I got close so he would'nt distract me. Usually on the straight leading up to the chicane.
Use the track indicator on the screen to tell if you are gaining or loosing time against him if you don't want him up at all. I find having him up gives me a sense of competition and something to shoot for (like the rabit at a dog race).

I really have tons of respect for anyone that has thumbs up to the task with a DS3 or anything other than a wheel! I know I could never even bronze without the wheel.

Regardless of what you use, I would run them Monza, Nurb, then Suzuka. That was the order of easiest to hardest for me. Also, I really think I made it through them with gold from just shear memorization of the moves on the wheel and pedals with the rythm of repetitiveness time after time after time.

Good luck, and don't give up until you get it.

Oh and yes like tALEz says, try different ABS settings. I was trying to be the man for a long time and do it with ABS on 1 but put it to 8 and it went much better. Remember, you're not trying to impress your friends, you're trying to get gold!

You can use the right analog stick for throttle (up) and brake (down), which will give you control over the amount of each that is applied. 👍

The hardest part about the Vettel challenges for me is steering with the DS3. I've yet to try it since they added the sensitivity adjustments, but previously, it was so twitchy that even the slightest mistake had me careening off of the track into a fail.

I know I've gotten much better with the Formula GT and Ferrari F1s using lowered steering sensitivity, so maybe it's time to give the Vettels a shot again.

The problem is, GT5 always messes up with my wheel and is oversensitive. I don't use my wheel anymore actually.

Adjust the wheel sensitivity and you can turn down the force feedback in the controller options in the settings menu... The FF turned down will reduce the risk of the X1 hurting your wheel with the FF and reduce sensitivity so the movements are less erratic..

I personally like the FF and the sensitive movement, but thats me, not everyone else which is why they have the adjustments for us to use ;)

Same here. I actually turned the FF up to 10 for the Vettle challenge and the sens to 7. Turning the FF to 10 seemed to help keep me from over steering while turning the sens down just seemed to make me understeer too much. You just have to play with the settings until you find what you like.
