Why is there a limit to the number of PSN friends?

This has been driving me crazy. For a while, I was just removing drivers that don't sign on very often...but now everyone on my list has been online in the last 24 hours. I'm having trouble deciding who to remove because I think all of them join me from time to time. :scared:

Arrr, Sony's pathetic "Rules o' Psn", maybe to stop the ser'ers from o'erloadin

Actually I think its due to memory limitations. I was listening to an interesting E3 podcast and they said that the original XBOX had its friends list capped due to the memory on the system and that its been like that ever since with all consoles.

The system has to be able to display 100 names and avatars at all times and also be ready for the unlikely event that they are all online at the same time messaging you. As they reduce the footprint of the XMB more features are likely to crop up.

I think the set limit is for your own good. It's countless invites, fake invites, private messages, chat invites with too many friends. I have secretly started deleting some of the older friends that I don't do anything with anymore.

Don't tell anybody.

I doubt it's due to PS3 memory issues, must be server related. After all, remember that initially the maximum number of friends allowed was 50, it was later increased to 100.

The PS3 XMB memory footprint has been halved since launch and it getting smaller was also the reason for in game XMB and music becoming available. Just like with any other computer type system the more 'things' you have on screen the more memory is uses.

As the XMB gets even more lightweight then the friend limit could increase in the future again.

True, which is why you don't put everything on screen all at once when you have a large (or unknown) number of items, but use a paging mechanism (much like this forum). And perhaps there's no room for one in the XMB, hence the limit.

Having less friends lets games like GT5 and GTA load quicker for me too. To start GT5 I have to load the entire 100 friends before the game will work, otherwise it wont.

I pretty much give up on my ps3, I will go to delete people and it locks up anyway .

I'd love the ability to categorise friends list, I have some I only play GT5 with, others only MW2, I find it's a little bit "thrown" together and not a great amount of thought to it. Game specific friends list would go down a treat imo and with how social gaming is exploding, it'll be interesting to see how Sony, MS and Nintendo respond to that with the PS4, 720 and WiiWii.

I find the 100 limit to be too restrictive. It's not exactly quick either.

Surely a bigger list would be even slower?

yes there are better ways of doing it, but I think Sony's whole attitude to the PS3 is just cost cutting after spending so much developing the thing in the first place.
