Why was it www.gtplanet.net and not www.gtplanet.com?

Damn, I remember Jordan explaining this before but have no idea where to start to look.

I'm pretty sure the his mum had something to do with the url, in some way or another.

Boombexus:Why GTP.net and not GTP.com? I remember GTP.com went to some defunct teddy bear company. Have you ever thought of obtaining the .com name?

Jordan:My mom is actually the one to receive credit for coming up with the "GTPlanet" name, and I couldn't come up with anything better so I decided to keep it despite the .net address. I was disappointed that I couldn't get gtplanet.com, but it was registered long before I got into the online world. I only wish they would sell it to me now, but they won't respond to my requests.

It's in the interview with Jordan. LINK

Some toy company already had it, although they appear to have gone extinct now. I like the .net personally, but that's just me.

I like the sound of it. The 2 "net"s seem to go well together. GTPlanet.net

Like daan said, I'm fine with the current URL. It's easy to remember, because I think of it like an echo.

GTPlanet!net!

After bookmarking it for so many years, I've almost forgotten it's ".net" and not a ".com". It's also a ".org", for those who need a fix in times of a crash.

Heh, let's invade Guatemala, so we can have ".gt"!

I had assumed that it was due to the cost issue, because ".com" probably cost more. Darn, was I wrong.

I also like the ".net". Don't worry, if the address changed to gtplanet.com, I won't leave or anything.

As an aside, I hate it when a domain owner just sits on it for years, doing nothing with it. My employer is in a similar situation. Our company was once a franchise. The parent company went bust and we bought the name, but somebody else owns the matching Internet domain name, with ALL the suffixes, yet has not had a site for at least 8 years! Likewise, we get no response from the owner or his listed host, and auto-bid attempts have failed.

Someone who makes no use of the name should be forced to release it. We're not going to give him any hundred of thousands of dollars for it, so what's he doing?

As for the topic, it never occured to me to wonder why it's .net instead of .com. Typing gtplanet{CTRL-ENTER} would be nice, but gtplanet.net isn't that much of a strain in excess.
