WiFi Question

So my mom got a laptop for work, and today we went to Eau Claire for a college visit. When we stopped at Borders, I tried to find a wireless network just to see if any were around. It said that the WiFi switch wasn't on, but gave no instruction on how to turn it on. So I was wondering how I might turn it on, or rather, is it an external switch or internal? I'm thinking that it's just a setting in the software, but I couldn't find anything.

Yeah, this is probably stupid, but I would really appreciate a reply.

If you can't find the external switch, hold down the "Fn" button, and press "f8", that's what it says on my toshiba. If not, the switch is located on the right hand side of the laptop.
