Japanese games giant Nintendo has confirmed that the price of its new Wii console will be much lower than its rivals.

The Wii will cost 25,000 yen or lower in Japan and $250 (£133) or less in the US, said Nintendo as it revealed its financial results.

The company added it aims to sell six million machines by March 2007.

The Wii is due out towards the end of the year, competing with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360.

The three companies are battling for a share of a video games industry worth some $30bn (£16bn).

...

Wii hopes

The Wii console is key to Nintendo's future success.

The company has just posted a 19% drop in annual profits, warning that results for its current financial year will be weaker than previously expected.

It is looking to the launch of the Wii to help its bottom line. Nintendo plans to ship six million consoles by March next year and aims to sell 17 million games for it.

The console has a one-handed controller that looks like a TV remote control.

It uses motion-detection sensors that allow players to control the game by moving the controller in the air.
$250? For anyone, that's a smokin' deal.

Well I expected the Wii (still hate that name) to cost much less than its rivals, much like GameCube undercut the two rivals by around $50. In my opinion Nintendo needs to price it lower considering its lineup of games. That was the case with GameCube, with its small line of games and noncompatibility with online play.

I know, that's the point. It needs to price it lower to try to at least compete with Xbox/PlayStation. Look at Nintendo's current games. I wager that people who buy GameCube are only doing so because of the never-ending reincarnation of Mario games. What other games are out for GameCube?

Basically what I'm trying to say here is Nintendo needs to reestablish itself as a major console maker in the gaming industry. GameCube wasn't much of a success in my opinion because of its hardware and its games.

It costs almost half as much as the 360, and less than half of the PS3. It has online, though not as advanced as Xbox Live (but it can browse the internet). It has a unique and fun controller. Even though it might not have the best graphics, it has 720p capability. And with the games, there are a lot of possibilities. Zelda: Twilight Princess looks really fun, same thing with Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros Brawl. It's completely backward compatible, and you can buy old N64 and other old systems' games online. And other games that normally would not be appealing, would be. Example, table tennis, baseball games, shooter games, etc. To me, $250 is a deal. 👍

I really think Nintendo is going to have the largest market share this time due to its pricing and innovation. The reason why I think the gamecube wasn't strong was because of the childish games it carried. Now Nintendo is trying to bring out more mature games because the majority gamers are getting older. I remember seeing Dora Explorer for the GC like last week...:indiff:

Great price and a it will have some great games, its a must buy for any gaming person, who loves to have fun. I was a bit shocked by the size of the Wii sensor bar, but I still want one.

So the official statement from Nintendo is a $250, maybe? Well, I think $250 is OK. But I also consider the X360 price at $299, so I don't think it's anything to get excited over. If $250 included demo games and 2 controllers, that's a different story.

I hope the final MSRP will be lower than $250, and if it is $250, at least throw in a extra controller.

Isnt 400 the base?
Theres one cheaper?
Im going to Best Buy!

The $300 pack doesn't have a hard drive, nor component cables. That means you can't download anything from the Xbox Live Marketplace, like demos, trailers, game add-ons, gamer pics, themes, etc. And you can't play in 720p or 1080i, and without that, the graphic difference between the 360 and the normal Xbox is minimal. Now, if you can't plug in an ethernet cord to your 360, and you don't have a HDTV, then the $300 pack may be good for you. But otherwise, it's a way for Microsoft to squeeze more cash out of you.

Being so, you can't save games either.

Which means you'll still be paying an extra $40 for a memory card. 👎

But does Wii come with hard drive or component cables for $250?. Plus, X360 is capable of those 720p/1080i High Def, while Wii, from what I understand, offers only 480p. Xbox 360 is a superior hardware with a High Definition capability, which IMO, makes it worth more than $49 over Nintendo Wii.

...Ok, you're right.

Not to change the subject, but I have a question for everyone... would you rather get a 360 and a Wii, or a PS3?

I'll take the PSWii combo.

Nintendo is not looking to compete with Sony or Microsoft. What people don't understand is about Nintendo is that it's not looking to dominate the market. Nintendo is Nintendo. What they bring to the table is exclusivity and supplementarity. Nintendo is just so, that gaming would not be the same without them. I, for one, feel that I've missed out on a great deal by not experiencing Nintendo's gamecube offerings. Disregarding Microsoft in this instance, I believe that Sony takes care of my "console entertainment" needs, whereas Nintendo's products supplement that experience so that I can finally feel like I've participated in the enjoyment of a completed gaming repertoire.

The media and general public always take things at face-value, but it is the true gamer that appreciates the magic Nintendo puts into their products, and it is that same true gamer that Nintendo chooses to cater to.

So a $300 360 is right on par with the Wii in capabilities? No, the tard pack is equal if not better when not factoring in HD or online.

...Ok, you're right.
Then again, original GameCube MSRP was $199(according to my brother $250, but I don't know), so considering those new wicked controllers, maybe $250 is not a bad deal(yes, I'm flip flopping, back and forth). :D

I'm going with Wii first, then PS3 when I can afford it, or when the Gran Turismo 5 comes out.

This is what I meant. In my previous post I was referring to GameCube, not the Wii. GameCube didn't have online, mature games, and its hardware was behind. That's why I was hoping that Nintendo would price the Wii significantly lower than the competitors, to win back share of the market and gamers. There are few people who only has GameCube only at their home, but there are many who only play PlayStation 2 or Xbox. That might change soon after Wii's release. I surely hope Nintendo will do better this time.

If the Wii is only going to be 250 then I am in for sure.
Now the Wii could be the master of all game consoles for years to come- a longer lasting system than the others.
Just a guess though. :sly:

I'll take the PS3 thank you. I already have the 360. :D

J/k, but still, I would take the PS3. Nothing has ever interested me from Nintendo. All the racing games were either multi-platform, or got old.

The only Nintendo game I still love is Super Smash Bros., but that's not enough for me to pay $250.

The constant put out of Mario games also pushes me away. After Super Mario Bros., I got sick of them. The Tennis, the Soccer, the Golf, jeez....
If I want to play any of these, I'll go out and buy a game that's actually all about such as Winning Eleven 9 ( :D ).

None of the unqiue titles interest me, and the graphics need an upgrade. Sorry, but after playing games like FEAR, BF2, and watching games like GOW, I just can not go back to something off Nintendo.
Hell, I can't even head back to the PS1 these days.

My last Nintendo purchase was a N64 for Super Smash Bros. Sold it, and never looked at Nintendo again. Nothing excites me from them.

I skipped the GameCube in the Last 3 Console Battle, and I'll be skipping the Wii in this one too.

Ok, let me clarify, for $600, would you rather have a Wii and a 360, or a PS3?

Well, the PS3 will most likely be the longest lasting system. Blu-ray will most likely be the winner of the high definition movie war. In 2008, TV will be going digital, so you either require a convertor box to view the channels, and by then, HDTVs will be really cheap, and a lot more people will have 1080p capable TVs. Then, people will be playing their PS3s more often, instead of playing their Wii in 480p in graphics just a bit better than the original Xbox. It's future proof, to say the least.

I have to agree with you there. To me personally, it won't matter as much. I've always thought the actual graphic generated by the console is more important than making it prettier with better resolution(High Def). If Wii can create good graphics, 480p scan should be good enough(again, personally), if they can keep the cost of the console down. But for most gamers, cutting edge graphics is very important. With Wii being underpowered right off the bat, plus with no Blu-ray or High Def, I don't see it keeping up the sales with the new Playstation.

The PS3 isn't $250 either. It's $500 for the base pack, and $600 for the one that everyone wants. I think the PS3 won't sell like hotcakes and you'll probably be able to stroll into Best Buy and buy one a few days later, even though it has enough power to launch a rocket to the moon.

And as for graphics, the PS3 will have the best by default, although all the next-gen consoles will look good.

Just some samples:

I think the PS3 won't sell like hotcakes and it'll be impossible to find one

Did you get caught up there Duck?
No worries, happens to me too.

Anyway, I agree. The PS3 does look great, but I still think Gears of Wars will give the launch PS3 games a run.

That Zelda pic shows exactly why Nintendo has still not reached the graphics tech. of Microsoft and Sony.
I mean, look at it, I can see the edges of the shield, and the hair.

In this day and age, graphics don't make a game, but it sure as hell does help to start keeping up with the competitions. Let's face it. These days, graphics are starting to play a key role in Console buying.

That's why many people choose the PS2 over others, and I think that would be the case with PS3 also.
