Well, if you can install applications on a PS3 like Photoshop, and Firefox, and MS Word and Excel, and MSN Messenger, and every other program I use regularly, well...

No. There's too many things with PCs and Macs that I'd lose by only using the PS3 as my "computer".

The PS3 can't do a majority of things a PC can do.

So no.

No.

I can capture TV, burn DVDs, program and several other things on my PC that I don't think you'll be able to do on a PS3. PCs and games consoles may be getting closer to each other, but (for the foreseeable future) there'll always be several things you can do on a PC that you can't on a games console. I can't think of anything you can do on a PS3 that you can't do on a PC...

Mr Deap
The PS3 is now a super computer.
feel free to vote.
Would you exchange your PC for an Xbox 360?

(Assume you don't already have one)

No, I will use both, I use my PC for work and occasionally for games, occasionally is more often than I use my XB360 and PS2 combined and I'm sure I'll use my PC still far more than the PS3 when I get that. That said I will use a lot of the features on the PS3 no doubt, but it won't replace my PC, even if it can do eveything my PC does, I need my PC for work.

So far from what I can tell the XBOX360 is NOT as fast as my gaming PC. I played PREY on the PC then beat it on the 360 and I could tell instantly the PC version was a lot better. However I am more comfortable with FPS on consoles so I decided to play thru on the 360. Its still an incredible machine. But right now its not as fast as a really good PC.
I say all this because I assume the PS3 will be very similar to the 360. If thats the case then the PS3 is not going to be as fast as a good gaming PC.
No I would not trade my PC for a PS3 or the xbox360. I do love my 360 but I would not trade my PC for one. :sly:
Thats why we now have 2 xbox360s and 2 gaming PC's. :sly:

Prey is a bad example. Does GRAW look as good on your PC? Can you run it on 1920x1080 with higher settings without slowdown? The fact that it can run most games at that resolution without any trouble beats many PCs today.

The bottom line is that the consoles really arent going to run as good as a well built PC. Its really not even arguable at all. And thats coming from someone that grew up on consoles. But now that I have a great PC I see that games on consoles just do not compare. At least right now they dont. Mabey after the PS3 and 360 are out a while they will get better. However so will PC's. Also will the PS3 or 360 run Solid works, Autocad, photoshop? I think we all get the idea. PCs are one world and consoles are another world. The reality is that the PC is always one step ahead.
I guess I will see when FEAR comes to the console. I will compare that one too. Also think of Battlefield 2. The PC blows the 360 version away.

What a waste of bandwith this thread is. Mr Deap we understand you dont like the PS3. Its becoming an obsession now. Guys don't even vote or respond with a serious reply, its a silly biased topic and a stupid question...

I will use my PS3 for gaming, and web browsing (when I need a break from gaming). The fact that is has a capable web browser, supports high resolutions, and will support multiple web based applications (i.e. flash, and mpeg support, java etc) will mean that I will be able to play GT5, and come directly to GTP or other websites and post up results, times, check email, etc, without leaving or moving.

Wireless Blue Tooth functionality also provides a plus, as my wireless keyboard and mouse are both bluetooth.

And for some reason, this thread strikes me as nothing more than bait.

Wait! I made a mistake. PS3 has no GTP. Or internet. or Word.
The PS3 is supposed to have the internet, so that is one tick on the list of useful features. Considering I have a PC right next to where it will be, I doubt I will ever use it except for downloading stuff.

If the PS3 will have a "Picture It" like program, then yes, it will replace my PC. There is a strong possibility the PS3 will have a program like PI because Sony make a product called the PictureStation. I see it being sold as a picture making add-on for the PS3. But, I'm sure some picture processing software is needed along with it, so that's why I think there will be a program like PI for the PS3.

Though, this thread started off as a joke, "Super Computer" crack sounds sarcastic to me, it's now a legitimate thread made so by the people who have posted in it. GTPlanet members can turn **** into gold...

There's things I do on my PC that PS3 won't be able to do. While it's power would certainly be an asset, it's OS and overall structure is completely incompatible.

So no. PS3 is a game console. It plays movies. That's all I'm going to be using it for.

So you won't use it to browse the internet, play music, or anything else?

I definately agree with you, there's things that a PC is just extremely better equipped to handle, but I can see myself listening to music, playing games, and surfing the net in the same setting...it just seems like more fun :D

Noperz. I'll probably have a Vista PC before a PS3, and we could be talking about a gap of more than a year there. On the reference point of it replacing a PC as a multi-media interface, another noperz there for me as well. It will do it, but I'd rather have a PC handeling the load. Hell, my 360 does it fine, and I can connect that to a MediaCenter PC to really kick some ass, but sadly I've only have XP...

Maybe if the PS3 was more like a "Mac" than a "PC" it might work out allright!

Do you have a nice home theater setup? I have a wonderful home theater, and I'd prefer to listen to my music on it, and if I can put my collection on my PS3's HDD and play it from there, then it makes it much more impressive than my PC.

And I'm not too hyped about Vista. MS has let me down three times with Operating Systems, so I won't really hold my breath. I'm sure it'll have neat bells and whistles, but it's still 2 years behind Mac operating systems.

Nope on the "kick-ass" home theater setup. I've got a good setup that suits TV, Music, and some baisic movie functions easily, but nothing like a Bose system like what is at my Aunt's house.

But even then, you can hook up your MediaCenter with your home theater and get some nice uses out of that as well, so I fail to see the bump-up with the PS3 other than it has a Blu-Ray player.

As for MS vs Mac, it is a matter of taste and what you like to use. I don't mind Macs, but I prefer a PC in most circumstances. It isn't that Macs are bad, but they don't have the software support that I want, and they have become far-too trendy these days to have one. Mac users are simply stuck-up by comparison to most PC folks, and I don't like that.

Vista will have some impressive stuff, but I'm not expecting leaps over XP other than DX10 support, and thats about it. I'll stick with my PCs, as I'm choosing not to be a "mac" in this situation.
