Windows Live Messenger, A bug factory ?

So we all know what happened to the good old MSN Messenger, it got replaced by the Windows Live Messenger. Are they the same developpers ? I have no freaking idea, but one thing is for sure, this same messenger has never been the same since...

Ok let's start by saying the truth. Yes, WLM is way more pleasant to the eyes than MSN was. The fact that you can change the colors makes it look even cooler (I've set mine in black). But does anything else is good about this messenger, compared to it's old gimmick ?

As the BETA of this software came, I thought it was going to be way better than the previous versions. It was as stable as the others, the new design was quite easy to the eyes, but without changing too much from the traditional MSN design. The first problems I've had with this new breed of Windows, in the BETA version was that it would mysteriously refuse to connect, then it would show this error message, and close... I contacted the support of the software, and once again like every computer support, I got turned down saying it was probably my machine. But in reality, I'm sure they didn't even know WTF was the problem... I ended up not using the BETA for the most part of its existance until one day I decided to download it back, and worked...

Sometime later, the official version would come out and I went to download it of course. I had it since its release. It worked well... Well, until the problems begun...

Bug Problem #1 - Unreceived Messages
So after several encounters with my contacts that I wasn't responding to them, it seemed like I was not receiving all the messages that were sent to me. Wait, it gets worse... These same messages would then be delivered to me as messages I'd receive when I was offline. So I was ending up connecting to WLM with tons of messages bombarding me like the cold war. Results, not reliable...

Bug Problem #2 - "Take the file I'm sending you for **** sake..."
What file ? I don't get any file... A problem that was happening with MSN Messenger 7/7.5 and still happen. Transfer of files, you'd say ?? Where's the transfer when you or your contact doesn't get a file that is sent ? Don't ask me why, I can't even answer this one myself. Wait, it gets worse... Sometimes after trying to have a file transfer and the cancellation, you may end up getting the transfer request and the cancellation out of nowhere. Now you end up confused if your contact was trying to send you something and selected the wrong file, or if he changed his mind, or it WAS the file he tried to send you WAY earlier this same day...

Bug Problem #3 - WTF, Haven't I blocked you ??!!
Yup, you heard it. It happens that you block someone for good, some temporarily because they piss you off, or etc... Over the years I've through many sites, many IRC networks, many places where I got contacts from. And whatever you like it or not, sometimes some contacts are blocking material. I've blocked people using WLM, I don't know how much (not that I block alot of people, but I don't count them...), and many of them ended up contacting me. I'm like, WTF, I banned this dude, how can he be talking to me ??!! Well, WLM mysteriously unblocked the contact. It pisses off when someone I blocked for good appears from nowhere talking to me...:ouch:

Bug Problem #4 - Select/Right-Click/Delete Contact... Contact added you in his list, what to do ?
WTF !!!! This is the bug that brought me to make this thread. This is the most stupid pile of crap I've ever been through with a Microsoft product. As said in bug #3, I sometime block people, and I delete some of them. I also clean my list, to keep the fresh contacts there, and the useless away... Then, I go to sleep, come back, and get this message like the contact added me to his list... HE HAD ME BEFORE !!!! I HAD HIM BEFORE !!!! I DELETED HIM !!!! WTF !!!! And everytime I reconnect to WLM, it does the same thing for the recently deleted contacts. I've had one I deleted like in November, and it still pops up from time to time. I use GAIM and Trillian as alternatives when I get pissed from WLM, and these softwares don't do this, only WLM does this. This is some of the biggest non-sense in my computing history... :dunce:

So, I wanted to detail what I've gone through with this piece. It kind of was my review of the software too... 👎

Have you gone through weird bugs, or bugs that pissed you off ? Detail it here...

I'm having the same problem as you (number 2). There are mails which I just don't recieve at all.

#1 has happened to me quite a few times before, sometimes when both contacts are online (me and a friend), whatever I type won't be delivered at all. Same goes if you are online but your friend appears offline, chances of you recieving your friend's messages on time is quite a rarity. There is usually a delay between the messages, or they don't get delivered at all.

#2 happened a couple of times to me before too.

No experience with any other bugs though.

Personally, I'm happy with live messenger. It looks and feels better than the previous versions. Messenger has always had its little quirks, no 1 and 2 have been around for ages?

A few other things that I like in live messenger: offline messages and the ability to log in into appear offline mode.

The one thing that I had hoped to have fixed is the transfer speed when you send a file through messenger..

The bottom line is, its a free service and I find it more than adequate.

I prefer it to the previous versions, but I'm not an intensive user.

I've never had much success with transferring files across it.

Ive had no problems whatsoever with build 8...... 8.1 is out in BETA but the fonts too small and it seems sluggish..

I'm using msn messenger 7.5 and it works, so i'm not going to try something else with bugs in it.

the ability to log in into appear offline mode.
7.5 als has that option. I always log in in offline mode, so that i can see who's online.
And if the person i want to speak to is offline, i close messenger again.

My WLM has a habit of blocking one of my contacts whenever it likes, normally once a week. This only happens to one contact out of my entire list.
I then have to unblock them, log out, then log back in for them to be unblocked.

It also has the habit of sending a emoticon selected at random itself, when no emoticon or key shortcut has been used. This normally happens once or twice a month.

Now windows security has a problem with WLM and won't let me open files from the conversation window because 'it may be harmful'. So then I have to go to the received location to open it, Luckily this is the desktop so not too much hassle.

In conclusion, as soon as Microsoft plaster the word Windows on something, it screws up.

I can't send files anymore, either. They go way to slow to tolerate. Why do I have DSL? For this slow crap? No, I don't think so.

Plus, I can't turn off certain things, and activate others. It never stores my savings. Why?

Plus, it's always crashing. Ask Omnis.

This thing is really an example of MS's half-assed approach to everything they do.

I don't remember having any of these problems aside the transfering file one, but that was always weak on MSN.

Wow. The first bug you mentionned happened to me a couple of times on previous versions, I don't really know if it still happens.

This should be a quote somewhere

Totally agree with you. 👍

I just put my problems down to a dodgy connection. It's fine in certain places in my house (wifi, blahblablah...), so I think it's probably that. But yeah, I get all those problems. I just stay on appear offline now so I don't confuse or annoy anyone.

I can't blame it on my connection, as I'm on an Ethernet wired desktop, with a really fast & stable connection.

*Check*

I agree. When I was using MSN 7.5, it was decent, but when I decided to try Windows Live, I nearly puked. Crap, ugly UI and tons of bugs made me switch back to 7.5 within the hour.

Luckily I'm using Adium now so I'm all good. But one thing that gets on my nerves are the file transfer times. 45 minutes for a 9 MB song? No thanks.

Personally I think live is more attractive. I didn't like the sounds at first, but I've got used to them. Everything else I've always liked, despite the problems.

Are all you guys on routers, by any chance? I wonder if it's firewall related.

My Live Messenger is pretty stable. It is certainly a lot better than 7.5, where I was having masses of problems.

The only ones I have now are occasional freezing, and people not seeing a few files I send. Messages sometimes don't reach people, but I think that is due to my connection being busy playing online.

I've had no problems with the Beta and 8.0 with my PC. Right now I have the 8.1 Beta, and its basically the same except for the contact cards. I want the old one back.

WLM never crashed on me, so I'm fortunate.

I even have problems when I'm not online.
Hehe, like the program not responding when you first load it up? I've had that before with version 7.

I had to go into the Task Manager and kill the task completely to get it to open up again.

This is what I think about WLMessenger

EDIT: I just installed a new version of windows live messenger. Hopefully the "bugs" are dead now.

Which the "new" version is the public beta of 8.1, I think. Beta = bugs to work out.

I noticed that the font size on in the contact list was slightly smaller than 8.0... thats the only reason why I changed back... I cant see!
