I have some .avi video files I'm trying to import into WMM, but I always get a message saying I don't have the right codec. The thing is, they play fine in the Media Player. Is that file type just not compatible with Movie Maker?

I think you've hit the nail on the head.
Not entirely sure but I believe WMM will only work well with WMV files. I've run into the same problem as you and I've never found a fix.
Good luck with the trouble but don't be surprised if the .avi never plays on WMM. :ouch:

The codec could be your problem and WWM does not know how to decode the codec. This happened to me with the xivd codec and the way I fixed it was I converted the video and used a different codec.

sorry but i might just have to hijack this thread to ask for help :p

i put a video together with no problems and it plays just fine in the preview window, but when i published it, the video was squashed halfway up the screen and the rest of it was just green. any idea why?

Thanks, nick, converting to DivX worked. But I don't suppose you know of a free converter?

Huh? Dr. Divx is free or do you mean a converter that converts many file formats? If so I heard that total video converter is a good converter.

When I first opened the Dr. DivX Converter, it said I was using a free trail version (I checked an option for the message not to pop up until the trail was over). But if it stays free, okay then.

Glad I found this thread. I'm running the latest version of WMM for W7 (my OS,) and I've got 37.7 GB on my C:/ Drive, but I only need to export a 207.7 MB video. But, I still get the error:

Error
Windows Movie Maker cannot save the movie to the specified location [C:/] Verify that the original source files used in your movie are still available, [done] that the saving location is available, [done] and that there's enough free disk space available [done], and try again [done x infinity]

Help please?!

People still use Windows Movie Maker?

Microsoft ruined it by adding the ribbon and removing features, it was better during the XP era.

The last good one was Windows Movie Maker 7.2, with Windows Media Encoder 9(to make custom profiles).

Try a program called AviDemux.

It is free, easy to use and supports a lot of formats, and saves in many too, not just WMV.

Still don't know which editing software is better. It's certainly better than GoPro cineform and ArcSoft ShowBiz.

I use Sony Vegas Pro.

@Greyfox I agree about it being far better during the XP days. Back then it was capable of making something decent, something the current one can't do.

I guess I'm lucky, by having XP... MovieMK seems to work fine, on my computer. Your work shouldn't be "wasted", if you only just re-import the files (I think...).

Will do.

Am doing. Hopefully it works this time. Otherwise, I throw a $600+ computer at a wall.
