Windows Movie problem

Ok, I have a serious problem. Ever since I installed WMP10 (at least I think that's when it started), windows movies haven't worked on my computer. By "haven't worked", I mean they take a few minutes to open, even a small one, and when the finally start, they play about one frame every 10 seconds. Not to mention they make my computer run at 100% constantly, especially while opening, if they open at all. Now for the really weird part. The CPU runs at 100% even if I left-click on a movie file. Single-click. It almost completely freezes up windows explorer. Even opening a folder with movies in them makes the computer run slowly. Even stranger still, mpegs seem to work fine, as do RealPlayer files and QuickTime files. They run perfectly and quickly. It seems that avi's, wmv's and everything else does not work. I've already run a virus scan, SpyBot, and AdAware, and I've tried The Core media player and also BS Player or whatever. Same problem. It seems to be getting worse. Does anyone have any idea what this could possibly be? I'm starting to think it's a really bad virus that is constantly getting worse, as my computer has been taking longer and longer to restart since it started. Oh, I've also disabled all the startup items (not services, just startup). .....any ideas?

Check and see how many processes you have running as well as how much memory/processor cycles each is using. Any more than around 45 is a high number of processes (IMO). I recently reformatted my desktop and it runs 35 - 39 processes depending on what im running.

It could be a virus but I'm not positive. I reformatted mine because of some abnormal behavior that my desktop was showing (plus it really needed it).

Yeah, I check my processes all the time. Never more than 30 or so running, and none of them look abnormal, nor do they use a lot of processor power. In fact, at times the only thing actually using CPU power is the idle process (at 99), yet ~50% of the processor will still be used. How often is it recommended to reformat? My computer's less than two years old, and I'd rather not lose a lot of the stuff I have on it. Any other suggestions?

You can backup all the important data before reformatting! Durr.

If you're really bothered about it, can't find out the problem yourself and don't want to reformat, just take it to a shop that fixes computers.

I reformat maybe once a year. The last time I reformatted was February of last year before my most recent format.

If you do go that route, make sure you backup everything you want to keep on another computer/cds.
