..someone.

Just thought I would ask you guys what's the best thing to do here. The wingmirror got smashed clean off my car by some rudeboy speeding down my street last night. I heard it, but didn't see anything. I've never had to sort out anonymous damage before, but I'm guessing the answer is that I will be paying for it without involving insurance. Anyone had this kind of thing happen?

Just buy a new mirror. It's annoying as hell, but for something so small it's not worth tarnishing your record with the insurance company.

Except with most modern cars, wing mirrors can cost hundreds of pounds. Depending on what functions the mirror has.

I would report it to the police anyway as they might have reports from other folk and maybe even know who it was.

Your next step would be to find out how much it would cost to get a replacement. You can then work out if it's worth going through your insurance or not depending on your excess and any no claims you may lose, or just paying for it yourself.

do Europeans have Junkyards? I'd suggest harvesting a replacement from there.

This all depends on what kind of car you have. On the Ranger, the ball joint on the side mirror was worn out. So when I would hit about 40 mph, the mirror would fold in. So I ordered a replacement through O'Reilly Autoparts. It was only about $20 if my memory serves me right. So if you have an older car, It shouldn't cost much even for a new replacement. Also, when you do get it replaced, you should take precaution and fold your side mirror in at night.

I replaced the wing mirrors on the Blazer a couple of times, I just bought the mirrors off of eBay or a forum dedicated to the vehicle. I think I got a replacement mirror off the S10Forums for like $15 plus shipping and I think off of eBay they were like $40ish.

Admittedly, we don't know what type of car he has, but the mirrors could be electric and heated and include an indicator and be colour coded so they could cost a wee tad more than $15.

This is very true indeed, I probably should have asked him in my first post since I work in spare parts.

My Volvo had the door mirror removed by someone whilst parked in a narrowish street. THe mirror has electric adjusting and heating. I went to a scrapyard, bought one for £25 and fitted it myself - 3 screws and an electric connecting thingy, 15 minutes work. Didn't bother painting it because I don't care that much. I didn't call the police or insurance, partly because it would create so much hassle but mainly because I didn't think to do so :dunce:

As already mentioned, what car you have will affect whether replacing the mirror will be rocket science or not.
