People, if ever there was a racing series I enjoy more than Gran Turismo, it's the WipeOut series. The WipeOut series is perhaps the most successful futuristic racing game series other than maybe the F-Zero series. Never heard of WipeOut Racing games? You're in luck becuase here I am to introduce you to the WipeOut Series of games. The WipeOut series began in around 1994 as a futuristic racing game which features several anti-gravity race ships racing around futuristic and amazing race venues, with the goal being to, of course, win it all. Unlike Gran Turismo, you must be able to beat down other race teams by using a broad arrangement of wepaons at your disposal. These weapons range from simple missles and rockets to plasma bolts and Quake weapons. Don't forget to make those costly pit stops, or you could be in deep trouble. Also key to this game series is all the bumping electronica ranging from pulsating trance music to bumpin' breakbeat music. Now the review.
BASIC INFO: There are a total of 48 race tracks. The breakdown includes 8 different locations (7 on Earth, then an awesome race on the Moon) complete with three different configurations that can all be raced in reverse. There are eight teams with two drivers each. The competitors are from all over the world including America, Japan, Tibet, South Africa, France, Australia (I believe), even a transsexual from Russia. Some diversity, eh? The racing action is fast and fierce. If you don't hit the speed indicators or pick up wepaons before anyone else, you're history. The BEST feature of the game is that each team has a special attack that either blows up anyone in sight or give you more health. Each venue has unique aspects to break themselves apart from one another. The easiest is the Nevada tracks, while the toughest are a tie between Mexico and Australia.
PROS: Great music; interesting tracks; nice ships; powerful wepaons; (when other championships are complete) you can create your own championship series; great extras
CONS: every race is three laps. I can remember doing 2 lap races in easier levels, then 4 in harder levels (WipeOut XL); some challenging Leagues; some rough tracks
FINAL VERDICT: This was the last WipeOut before WipeOut Pure for the PSP. I suggest getting this game if you don't already. It's yet another old school racing title from your semi- old schooler, John.
