ok i got this linksys WRT54G router and i can't get it working again. i had some lady from the linksys support thingy help me get it going last time. then i was messin with the router settings when i hit the wrong button(release all).anyways, now my router won't work and i am missing a couple settings i think. i called linksys like 3 times and they have given me 3 dif answers of what is wrong (corrupt wire, i have it hooked up wrong(wtf), and i don't have the internet in the first place(wtf again)). so linksys doesn't know what they are talking about, is there any settings that i need to have set to get this thing to work.

That's pretty hard to answer when we don't have any idea how you've got it set up now.

If all you want is to get it going again, just reset to defaults. They're configured to work straight out of the box.

If it's a reoccuring problem where it just ceases to function you may need to get the latest firmware from Linksys's website.

but my thing never has worked straight out of the box.when i got it it had the same problem i am having now. when we got it going there was like 4 settings we had to change(i don't remember any of them)

i have to have my modem going into the internet port in the router. and i have another ethernet cable running from one of the 4 out-going ports(it doesn't matter which one)

anymore info you would need to help me

Then there's a page where you need to fill in username and password information so the Linksys router can create a connection from your modem to your ISP. You should have that written down somewhere.

When you get your router you have to setup the Internet settings. Usually you will have to connect to the router using an address. I believe for Linksys router the default is http://192.168.1.1 It will ask you for a user name and password which is:
Username: admin
Password: Admin

Look in the connection settings and type in your internet username and password. Once you have entered your settings there is usually a "Status" tab. Look under here and it will show the status of your dsl connection. If it says disconnected, click connect.

Hope this helps, if it doesnt try the linksys website: www.linksys.com
👍

You hit the reset button which removed all of the settings.Actually I have a Linksys WRT-54G Wireless Router. When you go to 192.168.1.1 you don't use a username unless you have specifically created one. You password is admin unless you have changed that as well. When you turn on your computer with your wireless card you need to install your wireless PCI card and then choose your network id. The default one is Linksys. You can change this on the 192.168.1.1 webpages as well. We can't really help you farther unless you tell more of what your problem is. Make sure that all of your wireless equipment is either wireless B or wireless G as well. You shouldn't have to update your firmware either. I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you absolutedly have to. Make sure that you connect your DSL modem to the correct port. It is off to the side of the ethernet switch. Also make sure that the wire coming off the DSL router is a RJ - 45 cable(ethernet cable), and not a RJ - 11 cable (phone cable). If you use the switch you must use ethernet cable from it and you shouldn't have to configure the ports. Until you explain more of the problem, here is the router's webpage - http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=601 -
and here is a little PDF file about the router - ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/wrt54gv1.1_ug.pdf -
There is also another thread here at GTP that is about the WRT-54G that may help you. It is located here - https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=49359 - just pretend that the coaxial cable is the cable coming from the wall to the DSL router and that the cable modem is a DSL modem.

We're setting up a wireless network in our house. Can anyone recommend a modem/card set up that reliable and works well. The modem will be in the basement, but the computer is on the top level (2nd floor).

I have a Linksys router for school and we have a Linksys router/wireless card at home and we haven't had any problems with those ever. So I would definately reccommend those. I'll put the links up in a second.

Wireless NIC: http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124115

I can help you with the set up and everything if you need it, although its pretty self explanatory (if my dad could do it, you can do it).
