After a decade of having to put up with the New Beetle Convertible for your top-down VW needs, VW is coming out with a new, Mk VI-based VW Golf Cabriolet.

Having skipped Mk4 and Mk5, Golf Cabriolet has finally returned. Unlike the Golf-based Eos but like Audi A3 Cabriolet, this car employs a conventional fabric soft top which is lighter, faster and occupies less boot space than folding metal roof. It can be opened or closed in less than 10 seconds. Boot space is 250 liters, only 100 less than the hatchback. The top folds flush onto the tail when it is down.

The Cabriolet is available with all engines possible from the hatchback, including 105hp 1.2 TSI, 122hp 1.4 TSI, 160hp 1.4 TSI, 211hp 2.0 TSI, 105hp 1.6 TDI and 140hp 2.0 TDI. Needless to say, transmission includes 6-speed manual, 6 and 7-speed DSG.

Previous Golf Cabriolets were built by German coachbuilder Karmann. As the latter went bankrupt two years ago, it is not known yet where the new Golf Cabriolet is built.

I dunno. It looks a bit odd with the top gone. It draws attention to parts of the Golf VI design that normally wouldn't be notable, and I can't say that those parts look particularly good when they are the center of attention. I think the top is a bit too swoopy when it is up as well.


And I wish they still made convertibles with grab handles.
 
It looks goofy, like a cut and paste job was done hastily, only with no pasting done.
 
The old MK1 was and is still quite cool. The new Golf is too big and fat, they should have passed this on to the spiritual successor the Polo or even brought back the Lupo and kept the roof bar.
 
I guess for me, the fact that the Eos is still around almost completely negates the need for a Golf Cabrio, which means we probably won't get it in the US. A shame, it looks pretty nice, and assuming it sticks to the more affordable end of the scale, it would be a nice addition in an increasingly small convertible market in the US.

But even then, I'd be hard pressed to know go with an Eos. That fancy glass roof is too much to ignore.
 
I love Golfs but I don't dig this one, how much more would this cost than a normal Golf? I would go for a GTi instead...
 
If they can keep it under $20,000, there might be a decent reason to bring this over here. The Eos' price is pretty ridiculous at $34k, so I'm sure VW is losing a few customers who can't afford that. The Beetle is $27k, so this might be a good budget alternative to that. But if they're going to charge GTI prices for a Golf convertible, forget it.

I agree, a Polo-based 'vert would probably look better. Even with a pram-style roof.
 
I quite like it. Sort of looks like a budget A3 cabrio.
 
I'd buy one, would prefer an EOS if it was styled like this one but with the folding metal roof.
