Won't Shift

While My cusin and I where playing Arcade mode on Gran Turismo, in a 2 player battle, he commented that his automatic wasn't shifting past 3rd gear, then I tried it and it still wouldn't shift and I made sure that he wasn't holding R2, and he wasn't so I was wonderingwhat should I do???

RESET, could be he was holding down the R2 button whie it was loading ( weird problem I had once before )

Turns out he was holding a hole bunch of buttons while he was loading so thanks for all the help
