Ok so it's been a while since the PC original came out, which was a great success last year winning best strategy game in multiple places, or so I've read around. I then see that a console version will be available around, well now.

For those who don't know exactly what it is, it's an RTS game (or Real Time Strategy). Running on the same core elements as say, Tom Clancys End War, for which a demo is available on PSN now. Unlike games like Command & Conquer, it focuses largely on throwing you into the action, rather then building up a huge base and assets to create a huge force and mount your assault on enemy bases. This is much faster paced, with all the standard vehicle and infantry types at your disposal as well as special actions such as napalm strikes or even a mighty Nuke. You get snipers, various tanks, choppers, artillery and the like at your disposal freely during single player.

The game is set in 1989 in a fictional world war 3, with Russia attempting to take over... well everything basically but the main stay of the game is online.

During online you have 5 V 5 human players, each of which takes up a specific role (can change roles at any time although time consuming), these are Air, Infantry, Vehicles and Support (IIRC). Which forces teams to work together or you'll find yourself digging into a big hole that a well co-ordinated team will not let you out of. So far I've only seen a 'domination (COD4)' style mode, where multiple waypoints are scattered about the maps for you to take over and hold.

My main question is though, when is this released? Everywhere I look says Autumn/Fall 08, or 10/2008 (last month) but I still don't see it on sale. Anyone know when it's out? I'm really intrigued as I haven't played an RTS much in ages and this one appeals to me after playing the very ok End War demo today.

"World in Conflict: Soviet Assault is an upcoming PC to console port and a PC "mission pack" developed by Massive Entertainment and Swordfish Studios for the real-time tactics video game World in Conflict. It features the ability to play as the Soviet Union, against which the player fought in the original World in Conflict.[1]

Soviet Assault was going to be released in Q4 2008 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as a stand-alone game, and for Windows-based PCs as a "Mission pack". It features new missions in the single player campaign and will integrate these new missions with the current US campaign, meaning the two will be interwoven with one another. The gameplay features reinforcements that can be called onto the battlefield by either using the context menu or voice communication using the headset.[2]

On July 29, 2008, Activision dropped World in Conflict: Soviet Assault, among other games from their productions, putting the future of World in Conflict: Soviet Assault in question.[3] Activision-Blizzard will not publish the game, but the game is not necessarily canceled.

On August 6, 2008, Activision Blizzard put up Massive Entertainment for sale."

Going one step deeper to find out about Massive's future..........
"Massive Entertainment is a Swedish video game company based in Malmö, Sweden. The company is fully owned by Sierra Entertainment. They are best known for the Ground Control series of real-time tactics video games. Their latest project is World in Conflict, which has been described in interviews on the company's official website as a further development of the real-time tactics gameplay formula from the Ground Control games, but set in our world, during the late Cold War. It has also been described as being the largest project for Massive Entertainment so far, with a huge budget. The game was released on 18 September 2007 and won wide critical acclaim, including nominations for one of the best games of 2007.

On 6 August, Activision Blizzard put up Massive Entertainment for sale after canceling the publishing of World in Conflict: Soviet Assault. The future of the World in Conflict franchise is now up in the air. [1]" Copied from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massive_Entertainment

Yea i found similar digging around today, some people think it shall be postponed, other say cancelled, other don't know. Not knowing would seem the right one, which I'm pretty gutted about, I don't like End War much it's just 'ok' and I don't know of any other good RTS games that are around right now for console, my PC isn't good enough to run any.

I used to play an awesome RTS when I had a good PC. It was the WWII one where the US fought the Germans. Expansions later added the Russians and British armies. I can't remember the name of it. But, I miss playing it.

I downloaded the Clancy game but haven't done anything with the demo yet. I do enjoy RTS'ing. Currently, I'm on Civilization Revolution. I love that game.

Maybe someone will buy Massive and breath some life into the series. RTS's will always be welcomed by gamers as long as they deliver. Sounds like a good venue to me. I'll keep my ear to the ground for this one.
