World Tour: Upgrading...?

I have been playing World Tour for a couple of days now, but it seems like they are forcing us to upgrade our cars in order to compete with the AI.

I am currently racing with a Merc. E63, and most of my races are against M5s, M3s, C63s, RS4s etc.. and they all seems to be much faster than me.

Is it possible to just race a stock car without upgrading the performance against AIs that also have stock cars?
 
It's possible. You also sometimes get more money finishing in second or third with a slower car than if you use a car with a higher number.
 
In the events list, it is possible to turn off upgraded cars.;)
I've not tried it yet, just noticed the option.

I was just coming to complain about this. How do you turn the the upgraded opponents off?

In the events list, if you look at the bottom it says press start button to choose difficulty, from there turn of the upgraded cars.
