Update. My friend got an Exedy Clutch and some flywheel that I forget the brand, and were changing it on thursday by ourselves with instructions from the internet...

I'll tell everyone how it goes.

Good luck, you shouldn't have too many problems if you take note of where everything went and don't rush.

Have fun with it. And don't get any grease on the friction surface of the flywheel or clutch.

Well, we went to shop yesterday to change the clutch, a dude from school asked his dad to let us use it. First off, we tried to drive the car, and it didn't move, so we had to get it towed.

Changing the clutch in a Miata is a hell of a lot harder than it should be. I think it is because all the stuff is cramped into that little car but still...

To take off the transmission, you need to take off the driveshaft, to take off the driveshaft, you need to take off this cover thing. To take off the cover thing, you need to take out the entire exhaust system. To take off the exhaust system, you need to unscrew the downpipe from the headers. To unscrew the downpipe, you need to take off the headers to get to the bolts on the downpipe. To get the headers off, you need to take off the heat shield. To take off the head shield, you need to take off the air intake system to get to some bolts.

Then you have to get the transmission off the acual car. To do that you need to take off the center consol to get to the shifter assembly. Then, after you get there, you need to take off the starter, cause for some reason it is connected partly to the transmission. We also had to take off the brackets on like 3 hoses and wires to get to the starter itself.

Basically, it has been 11 hours, and we have only gotten to putting the transmission back onto the car. We still have to put on the exhaust, driveshaft, shifter, headers, starter, intake system, and a bunch of other random stuff.

Oh, and about the old clutch. It was so worn out, the pads were only about 1mm thick on both sides and you could flake them apart with your hands. I'll try to get some pictures of it on here sometime.

Too bad on the exhaust, first time Ive heard anyone had to go to the extent of taking the whole manifold off. but when working on cars the unexpected always happens.

Just think of it as experience.

Thats all pretty normal. The starter usually is bolted to the trans (even though its usually on the engine side) because just under the bell housing is where the ring gear is.

Sounds like it went well and its a great learning experience. As I stated several posts back, pretty much knew it was the clutch. So thats good news. At least you took it all apart and found out it was the clutch instead of something worse. Congrats on your first major hands on experience with the car. Once you do a clutch on a car you know quite a bit about where everything goes. Anything from this point forward will be easy for you. :sly:

the shop was mine and that clutch was a pain the arse to install over all and then the car got totaled and now we hav to do it all over again !!!! YAY

...So you own a car repair shop and you aren't old enough to have a learner's permit eh?

Putting a new clutch in a totalled car?

Way to bring up an old thread.

It was his dad's shop and the Miata was totaled, but my friend got a new one, and now he's bought another flywheel and clutch, so we have to do it again.

EDIT: Actually, since I'm premium now, I'm gonna lock it.
