Hey guys, I'm new here. I was wondering if it would be worth it to buy a PS2 Slim and GT4 now. The only reason I am doubting it is because the technology will be outdated soon, but then I will probablly be done with video games. So is it worth it? Is GT4 an amazing game?

Ohhh boy ;) Have you tried the search button :-)

But yes... it is.. It has some shortcomings that people can't seem to stop b!tching about - I could care less.. I've clocked in over 200 hours and am still enjoying it..

But please - Search and get aquinted with the Forum.... The Mod Squad WILL come after you - as well as the Flaming !...

[Edit:] And do yourself a favor if you buy the game - Buy a DFP as it increases the game ten fold..

And you're NEVER too old for video games ;)

Yes, if you are at all interested in cars than by all means you should pick it (PS2 and GT4) up. But like Flerbizky said, definitely get a wheel. I have the older (blue) wheel which works great and I have heard the new one is quite a bit improved. Best Buy has the Driving Force Pro on sale this week for $129.99 (reg. $149.99). Playing with a wheel is great, once you do it you won't want to use the controller to drive with again. 👍

You may as well pick up GT3 as well, it can be found used for less than $15

My two cents. :)

To me it depends on what you already have.

If you have anything along the lines of a PS2 (an old ps2, a xbox) then no.

If you are using an old N64 or PS1 or something like that, go ahead and get a ps2.

The thing here is that the Slim PS2 has problems. :(
If you own a normal PS2 or Xbox already, then there is no need to buy a new system.

However, if you are still on the old systems like PS1 and N64... :D
First off, you would obviously no be the kind to worry about out-dated systems.
Also, the "out-dating" of the PS2 and Xbox are way off into the, future than any PS3/Xbox360 fanboy would have you think.

I personally will use my PS2 for atleast another 2 years. 👍

So basically...
If you are still playing a PS1 or N64, go ahead and get a normal PS2 (try to avoid the slim model).

Don't sweat the "out dated" status.
I still play PS1 games on my ps2 and I still game it up with the N64 from time to time.
The PS2 looks great IMO (especially with gt4) and when I looked at the price of the X360 and the estimated cost of the PS3- I have decided to wait for a few years before purchasing anything. 👍

Basically, just to say it one more time...

Only buy a new PS2 if you are still gaming on the old stuff.
(and try to avoid the slim ps2... they over-heat!)

Good luck. 👍
I'll be playing my ps2 for some time to come so if you ever feel like it's outdated just come and talk to me. :P

Either buy the big PS2, or cough up the cash for a PS3.

Also, don't buy GT4 if it costs more than $20. It's just GT3 with more cars, more tracks, worse physics, and more stupid game-design decisions.

If you don't have GT3, then by all means buy it. :)

Why does the slim PS2 keep overheating then? Surely they'd have thought about it when they designed it. Anyway, i've got a big one from 2001 and it's still going strong.

Also, don't buy GT4 if it costs more than $30. I think It's just GT3 with more cars, more tracks, worse physics, and more stupid game-design decisions that I do not like. But dont go by my negative opinions its just what I think.

But from a general opinion it's better than GT3, so by all means buy it. :)

.....

It's worth it. I just bought a slim PS2 cuz my old one from whatever PS2 came out crashed for good. The slim one hasen't overheated on me yet ( 8 hr staight is the longest I've played it in one sitting ). GT4 is awsome. It's worth buyin.

I doubt Sony would release a new faulty PS2 to replace the old one. I've had ym slimline on for 14 to 15 hours at a time, and I believe Famine has had his on for almost 150 hours when he was doing the 24h endurance.

If you really like cars, then I say splurge on a PS2 and GT4. And if you get a wheel, it'll probably become one of the best games you've ever played.

I got a slim to replace my fat ps2, and it works fine. Tho gt4 has its issues, it's by far, got the best value of all my games. Trust me, get a ps2 and gt4. Best. Investment. EVER!

The slimline ps2 does not overheat, I've had mine on for over 72 hours straight with absolutely no problems it just got warm and GT4 is probably the best racing game i've ever played so i'd say its worth it.

Although I disagree about worse physics, GT4 is, given, not as pick-up-and-playable as GT3... but it's still a swell game.

The slimline does not overheat, given reasonable precautions. Just get the vertical stand and you're all set... just don't knock it over.

The thing here is that the Slim PS2 has problems. :(

What problems?

My two cents, yes if you like cars alot then yes get GT4(and PS2). But defintely get some time of wheel, preferably the DFP if you have the money.

What if I explained that by "worse" I simply meant "not as enjoyable?" ;)

If I had wanted to say that GT4 was "less realistic" I would've used those words...not that GT4 is a whole lot more realistic than GT3 anyway... :indiff:

I can't believe how small the sucker is! As for my PS2 it's still going... I hope for another 2 yrs. like Kent but it's getting old. If it died I don't know what I'd do but I'm just hoping it last till the PS3 comes around. :nervous:

It's very much worth it.

You can get GT4, as well as many many new and up coming games.

HOWEVER. I would recommend you possibly tough it out, or buy a used one, until the PS3 comes out.

I mean, you figure, PS2+GT4=$200. Given another year, if you can save up another $300-$400, you'll be able to get a bad ass set up with the PS3 and still be able to play all your old PS2 and PS1 games.

So, honestly, if you're not hurting for some gaming action, I'd say hold it out until the PS3.

If you are hurting for some gaming action, hit up GameStop and purchase yourself a used PS2 for like $119, and save the extra few bucks. (Used consoles have a 90 day warrenty BTW from GS).

It is worth it, but I'd have to agree with tha_con, get a used one. There's really no point paying full price for one now. As for GT4, it's great, but it is in desperate need of some online play. The AI is horrific which almost totally killed the game for me. I sincerely hope that GT5 has online racing.
