Would I be better at GT5 if I'd use a wheel instead of controller?

So yeah, I don't own a wheel, so I have been playing with controller.
Is it really easier to play with wheel? Should I buy it?

I'm also thinking about this because:

I have problems beating that Formula Cup and S. Vettel Challenge.
I'm getting tired of trying million times to beat those two things. I think I'm a pretty good driver, but somehow I manage to fail at those.

And no, I'm not constantly spinning around with Formulas/X2010. :D

EDIT: Any recommendations for a wheel then? I don't care much about the price, I just want it to be good (=realistic?).

The only reason i may consider getting a wheel is because i smoke heavily, 40 marlboro reds, it would be easier to smoke and drive.

personal preference it all depends i myself am very used to the controller and able to gold pretty much everything its all a matter of having good smooth hands not too jerky and youll be good be smooth what i do sometimes is break into the corner hard and then half way through it i hit the gas on the way out while giving full steer because the car is going into the corner at a high speed youll want to steer heavy into the corner

If you get a wheel it does make driving easier but you have to get used to it. You are not the only one having trouble with the vettel challenge. I struggled with it too until the recent update. Now that I have the car I've gotten quite used to it doing the Suzuka endurance. Now every other car is like driving a prius

I'm still like 2 seconds off after the update. So okay, I'll buy a wheel and get used to it.

But what wheel? :D

I use a g27 which is great. Alot of people are saying the Porsche wheel is slightly better

Wheels don't necessarily make you better, but they will universally make you worse while you adjust.

The problem I had with controller was that even using the analog sticks you were pretty much 100% turning or 100% straight. Sweeping turns are really tough and consequently slower with the controller. I would assume that the recent addition of a setting for how quick the wheels turn with controllers would mitigate that issue somewhat.

On the other hand, it's a lot harder to handle a loose (oversteer) car with the wheel imo. With controller, sliding the tail is easier to deal with b/c you can get to wheel lock virtually instantaneously when counter-steering. With the wheel, it takes a lot longer (and wakes up the family) when I am spinning the wheel like a maniac b/c the car is fishtailing.

Translation: After you adjust, the advantage on long, sweeping corners will be noticeable (think Autumn Ring or Daytona for the most obvious examples of what I'm talking about), but your driving style and tuning style may have to change especially with high-powered FR cars.

With manual transmission and a wheel, you'll have much more control over your car and have a bigger space for mistakes, especially in tight situations. >_>

Trouble is every one turns into an idiot when i stop smoking.

Love it. I have the exact same problem! It's worse when I am doing 4hrs. around the ring without a smoke

It depends on what difficulty setting you want to use.As stated many times in these forums, "a wheel makes the game easier". Therefore you could look at it this way.

DS3 <--Hard--------Easy--> Wheel

So as i said, it depends on what difficulty level you want, easy or hard.

Well said... i perfer the DS3.... with the right suspention tuning and sesitivity set to 3, i get faster laps with the DS3. Besides its a game, if i wanted to use a wheel and pedels i would get in my car and take a drive

I just got a wheel and it has made the game much more fun for me whether I am faster or not. I am still getting used to it but on the first day I used it I was able to improve my times on all of the license tests I tried.
