I don't know much about rally racing but I just had to share this video. Some of you have probably seen it, others, you're in for a treat.

It's called Climb Dance by Peugeot. It's an incredible clip. Makes me wish the pikes peak course was in GT4...

Speaking of that course. Seems kinda suicidal. How are cars not flying off the side of the mountain... or have they? I can't believe how fast they are going. BTW I think the puegeot passed an Escudo on the side of the road there?

thats awesome! I love watching hill climbs!

CLIMB DANCE. It has been posted a couple times but that video never gets old. Sick and terrifying at the same time. They are easily the best drivers in the world!!
Watching that reminds me of Rallisport Challenge 2 for the xbox. Awesome game with hill climbs and tons of rally events.

Unfortunately the Pikes Peak road will soon be completely tarmac. A number of years ago the environmentalists complained about all the dirt being flung off the mountain and settling in nearby waterways. I understand that a fair bit of the bottom end of the raod has already been covered and the rest is due to be done in the next few years.

It makes this sort of video even more special because we will soon no longer be able to see the peak in all its true rally glory.

Seen it before, but still a great video to watch. One of the coolest tracks in GT2 in my opinion, and hopefully they have something like it in VisionGT. I'd have to be completely drunk to do the track in real life though, too crazy for this kid. :scared:

The grand canyons got nothing on Pikes Peak...my god that was amazing. I cannot believe he came so close on that one slide around the corner....scary talented!

I don't know much about pikes peak. Are a lot of the cars Duel engined? Whats the average power?

Oh yes, I can't remember his name but it's a famous clip for his 'sun visor'
That made it even more crazy to see. He's blinded by the sun holding his hand up trying to see while on loose dirt curve going 60-100mph on the edge of a cliff with a road maybe 15 feet wide... It's just jaw dropping. These guys have to be a bit crazy to do this but then again I think all racers have a bit of insanity in them.

Even beyond that I can't believe they can even control these 900hp cars on loose dirt to begin with. Controlling tire spin is hard enough with that much power let alone doing it at 100mph on the edge of a mountain. I can't even begin to describe how I amazed I am yet I am also saddened that this type of stuff gets so little press opting for boring ass ring racing with stock cars and half the people watching waiting to see a crash...

as u go up in elevation... because of the lower density of oxygen the cars dont produce as much power. i dont remember how much power the car loses but i think it was a few hundred horsepower by the time it reaches the top.

Hmm... Interesting. Never thought about that factor before.

It's Ari Vatanen in the Peugeot 405 T16.

Basically when Group B was banned in the WRC after 1986, Peugeot went looking for events in which their car could compete. The 405 was a development of the 205 T16 used in the WRC.

Peugeot competed in the Dakar rally in the late 80s, early 90s with Vatanen taking a few wins. They also took on the Pikes Peak hillclimb.

If memory serves, you lose 10% of your power for every 1,000 vertical feet you rise above sea level.

This means that the 1000hp Suzuki Escudo Pike's Peak of legend (and Gran Turismo) has 1000hp only at sea level. At the peak of Pike's Peak - 14,110ft - it would have just 228hp...

Isn't that different for turbocharged cars?

And normal cars wouldn't be able produce enough torque to move at all

I don't think it's as high as 10%. More like ~3% (Different sources range from 2.7 to 3.4% on power tests). At 1,000 feet you lose .5 psi. These numbers do change a bit though as you ascend higher and depends on how your NA, Turbo, or Supercharger and fuel mixture is set.

So the 900hp pikes peak car like the Escudo (actually 970ish BHP) would still be a raging 587bhp (3% calculation) at 14,000 feet. And that's just roughly speaking, this all depends on the above noted variables and also just the weather. Barometric pressure of course changes with weather causing higher or lower psi (like how pressure lowers when a storm is coming in ...and how if you have athritis you can "feel" the storm coming).

Anyways still alot of power there for a sub 900kg car.

Rally racing ROCKS! Its one of the only things that keeps me up at night, next to Carlos Mencia, sex tapes, good movies, GTP, and good videogames.:) sorry if that goes against the AUP^^

Turbo cars are compensated by a wastegate to maintain the boost. The loss of horsepower would be caused by the rarified amount of oxygen and other possible factors.

But unless you want all the back pressure to go some place, like exploding:dunce:,:dunce: You need a wasteguage to let off the boost. If not, then on of your lines will burst or come off. Ive seen it happen before. If you watch you boost guage just start to climb and climb and nothing goes down, your going to do SOMETHING that is going to wreck the engine

Some are/were dual engined like the Suzuki Cultus and the earlier Escudo hill climb cars most use a single engine. Power ranges from 400-500 to 1000+ depending on the car and class, but as has been said, the higher up the road the cars get the less air there is so the less power the engines produce.

Almost heart-stopping! That's some *amazing* talent and again reminds me of why I love rally racing more than any other sport. Simply amazing.

That's amazing. A perfect example of how dangerous, exciting, and how skilled and fearless rally drivers are. The different shots are put together very nicely too; never a boring moment in that vid (save the opening titles).

👍 👍

about 2/3 of the way through when he makes a left turn you can breifly see the Escudo on the side of the road. Its just like a big red blur.

No theres been several different Escudo's raced at Pikes peak from the first twin engined one that replaced the Cultus in 1995 which was only used for one year, followed by the first V6 engined version in 1996 that appeared in GT2, followed by the one that raced in 2001 alongside the Suzuki Aerio (Liana) Pikes Peak car which was faster than the Escudo but it broke down 1 mile fron the end upto the latest Escudo that won the event this year.
