So, lately I've been getting bored, and seeing as I can't find a way to buy Team Fortress 2 by itself for the PC, I've recently been learning and watching my friends play Warcraft.

But I want to know if it really is worth it. Not only the $15 is a bit of a turn off, but I'm more concerned about learning the purposes of all those icons and spells, and what each character and race can do.

So, any WoW players here find it worth the price and time?

The game is uninteresting after about a month, it's the same thing over and over again.

It's a great time waster, thats for sure. I've been playing for about a year now, and I still don't have a character at the highest level. The general rule is, if you want to get anywhere in the game at a decent rate, you need to play an absolute bare minimum of 10 hours a week. Most good players spend 20+hours a week. If you can't do that, don't waste your time.

it's not worth the IRL social black hole that forms because of it

+1

My ex-housemate/collegemate is an addict. He does nothing but play WoW for the duration of an entire semester, and I've only seen him in college about 5 times. Although this is an extreme case and I'm fairly sure you'll be able to control yourself, personally I think there's nothing great about it. Waste of time.

Be careful if you doubt your self-control at all, because it appears to be a fairly addicting game – I know way too many students who spend way too many hours playing it. I mean, any game can be that addicting, but it seems WoW players are the worst about it. One of my suitemates last year probably spent at least 8 hours a day playing it, on weekdays – goodness knows how long he spent on weekends (I believe he purposely uninstalled it this year so that he could get back to doing schoolwork).

If you find the gameplay fascinating and you don’t play till your eyes bleed, then by all means, more power to you. Just be wary of the time commitment.

I appreciate the advice guys. Becoming an addict isn't a problem. I solved things like that after playing CS:S for hours upon hours a day.

I would probably project myself playing WoW maybe 1-2 hours, possibly 3, every other day. The thing is that I want to get the most out of the $15 per month, which is about .50 cents a day.

But since some of you play it, perhaps you could enlighten me on all the icons, menus, and clicking that you have to do? The bottom of the screen is something I really don't want to find myself spending weeks figuring out.

The icons are fairly complicated to learn but once you get the general hang of it it's not that bad. There are so many different user interfaces though it's hard to explain how it all works though. The best thing to do is have someone sit down with you so they can show you how everything works.

Also be warned the game play at any level below 50 is rather shallow. You do very repetitive quests which involve either killing x amount of a monster, finding someone, or delivering something. There really isn't a main quest you are trying to achieve like many RPG's.

For the amount of time you plan on playing it I don't think it's worth it and you would be better served with something like Neverwinter Nights 2, or if you want an MMORPG there is alway Guild Wars which does not have a monthly fee.

Thanks for the info, Joey. I think I'll try a 10-day trial my friend has, and see where it goes from there.

I won't get addicted, I'll only smoke a cigarette every few days, I swear!

WoW isn't complicated at all. And it only gets addicting if you don't have anything better to do. The Icons are really simple, you will start off with 2-3 of them, then every 2 levels you get new skills and buy those from a class trainer using in-game money that you earn in game. I've been playing for more then a year now, I do have a lvl 70 and have seen plenty of end game content. I only play a couple hours a day, but i'm only 16 so I do have plenty of free time. I could answer just about any question you have. For me if you play alone, it gets boring.. no doubt since it is a very social game so i suggest playing with a friend you know in real life, or find someone to level with, or join a guild to keep you interested. Always works for me.

Yeah, it's not that complicated. Especially at the beginning when you do only have 2 or 3 spells. Just try the trial like you said. You might enjoy it.

OK, I am extremely frustrated with this installer. I downloaded the 10-day trial, and every time the Installer starts working, it finds some kind of random-ass error. First was a Tome Error. Next 2 were something else. These last 2 was another Tome Error and the 5th has to do with the logo-wow.gif and some cinematic crap.

Honestly, I am not going to spend any more time with this ridiculous installer or this game unless someone knows for sure what I need to do. I can't fix them because I don't have a directory for them, and the forums require information I'm not going to give out for something I might not be able to play.

Yes. Freshman year I didn't know what the game was and a friend let me play it on his highish level character for a few hours and after leaving his house went out and bought it and wasted 2 years of my life. Now the character that was level 70, had some nice stuff, and took 2 years to get there is now his and I don't care. (Although I probably could have sold it for a pretty penny) I never had played a game like WoW and I figured it was going to be boring but it was the exact opposite so like Sage said, be careful.

Ahh, WoW. My buddy has been recently addicted to it. I started question his judgement until he made me play. Let's just say he made me a dude at 8:30pm & I played until he woke up @ 10am. It's not addicting, I swear.

[/sarcasm]

I find Guild Wars suits my needs well. It's addicting, but only for like a day at a time. It's very easy to detach yourself when you have things to do.

WoW > Guild Wars

The overall experience is much better. GW is better suited for you though if you don't care about playing with others. GW is also much quicker, with a much lower level cap.

Ignore this fellas.

Finally getting to play as soon as the Updates hurry up. Gah....

You'll sit forever waiting for the updates...it's ridiculous the length of time it takes.

136MB of 474MB after 10 minutes.....

Of course, I hear it gets much worse. My bud told me a couple days ago they were updating from 3AM to 11PM. :scared:

You also have to install more then one update typically. I remember the first time I installed it it took almost 3 hours to get all the updates I needed for the game. Also you can't play on Tuesday mornings because that's the day they do maintenance on the servers.

So I take it this is a very updated game, then.

I like how it says, "About 9 minutes." Then it goes, "How about 12 minutes."

There is a new patch about every month or two which adds newer higher level content to the game, like a dungeon. You get a new update pretty much every Tuesday though, some times it takes about a minute to update while other times it's much longer.

Every Tuesday is mantinence day. They shut all servers down from 5AM to 11Am PST to run maintenance. Also, they don't add new "higher level content" every patch. 90% of everything the minor patches do is fix bugs or change certain things. Only the major patches (read: several hundred MB worth) add new "higher level content."

I see.

I played for about 2 hours, and honestly, I am confused as hell. I can't find any quests, and getting things to people, and equipping stuff is just awful.

I think I'll have my same friend show me what to do.

 I suppose it could be a little overwhelming at first if you've never played anything like it before. Give it another few days and you should get the hang of it. BTW, what server (realm) are you on and whats your characters name/class?

What a wretchedly boring game this is. I went through the same thing as McLaren, and then after all that, I felt I had lost 2 hours of my life to nothing.

It was fun running around as a half-nekkid girl flirting with all the losers/addicts, though.
