All I've been getting is "You have been disconnected from the server", sometimes litterally 10 seconds after I joined.

And exactly WHY am I being disconnected? It helps if I'm told WHY. As of now, I have NAT type 2 and high bandwidth, and apparently that's good.

Yet I can barely get into 1 or 2 games and actually stay there.

And before anyone cries "look at the bars and stars!!!!!", please elaborate WTF they mean, as it doesn't say in the "drivers manual".

I think in the settings it says somewhere reset cache or something like that.

It should help

The stair looking bar means the hosts and your connection towards each other.
If the host has low speed it will have a slower (lower indicating icon) speed.
The Stars on the other hand is still "WTF" for me.

The "you have been disconnected" also shows if you are kicked. WHICH IS A MAJOR failure from PD's side...
Why didn't they just add "You have been kicked from the room" instead...

Not too sure about your connection issues, but as for this bit, look harder. It's right there under your nose.

Stars are "race quality". In other words, the quality of everyones movements. Low quality is extremely jumpy/jittery with lots of lag and teleporting.

Race quality on very high is almost as smooth as single player.

And the default setting is "high". High isn't good enough for me, especially after seeing the quality of "very high". PD, CHANGE THE DEFAULT TO VERY HIGH! I'm sick of online being flooded with low quality races because everybodies too afraid to change a setting!

stars are race quality, in other words they are the overall connection "speed" required between you and the host. If it's a 5 star room and you have a crappy connection, you will either not connect, or be disconnected automatically.

You MUST either have a GREAT upnp capable router, open ALL necessary ports, or DMZ your PS3 through to the interwebs in order to have a decent online experience.

Your PS3 XMB "test connection" should run through quickly and smoothly resulting in NAT2 (or NAT1), a good down and up speed and should not stall or hang during the test. If it does, or gives you a NAT3, well.. good luck trying to race online

yea i got that same message at least 6 times today

ah ok. that makes alot more sense then my guess. I never really gave it much thought until now. They need to add a filtering system to the online race search.

I'm in Kuwait at the moment on wireless, It is hit or miss for me. Sometimes I get a room and I can get a good run in. Other times I get disconnected after about 3min. I don't play online much here as a result.

I was getting disconnected a lot with wireless connection to the ps3. I've now changed this to wired, and have not had a disconnection since.

More likely than not you are getting kicked. If you want to test if it's your connection, make your own room and see if you get the message. If you don't, you're getting kicked. The people there are like that, they kick you for no reason, I got tired and just race with my friends now.

We're in the same boat man

Yea I did just that... made my own room and I got kicked from it lol.

Sadly I have to use wireless rather than cable.
That said, I didn't have any problems until the last few days.. now it's terrible.

NAT Type II, decent bandwidth.

The bars are for the Host quality setting, it determines how many packets get sent. The higher, the smoother the car's movement will appear, but requires more bandwidth. You set this when hosting a room

The stars are the ping time. More stars means there is a lower ping, so less lag.

The default recommended setting is low not high, for me, which means if yours says high, the default/recommended is decided by your connection.
I have just ordered a long ethernet cable as wireless on the PS3 now is just not working properly.

If you are having issues with the PS3 over Wi-Fi use the connection option on the PS3 to check your signal strength, the phats have terrible receivers in them. Once you get a stable 100% signal strength things get much better.

I read in the user guide that stars are race quality, how often the host and server swap info. Lower quality means jumpy cars. I don't know about the bars. I ignore it as it doesn't seem to make a difference, I think it's broken right now and is just for show. :)

Getting 100% strength is almost impossible on a fatty, I've had my router sitting right next to the PS3, en it never reached 100%, 93% was the highest I've gotten it. Maybe if you open up your fatty, and place your router inside the PS3.

I can get 100% easily on my launch 60gb PS3 and router is the other side of the room.
But i think there is something wrong with the PS3 receiver as i only get from 1mbps to 3mbps connection, but if i put my netbook ontop of the PS3 the netbook gets 9.5mbps. My 10m ethernet cable arrived in the post today, i now have an instant 9.7mpbs connection at the PS3 now. Great. Quadrupled my bandwith for £1. Bargain. The PS3 internet test doesn't tell me my ping but that should have improved a lot also.

It's an issue on Polyphony's end. During any day of the week except Sundays, I have absolutely no problem connecting to people on GT5, and nobody else in my group has problems either. Then, on Sundays, people can't connect to each other, can't see each other, and can't hear each other, no matter whose lounge we use. The biggest error I see isn't a disconnection error so much as a "network incompatibility with host" error. Again, this only pops up on Sundays and hits everyone I race with hard.

As far as signal strength with wi-fi, try placing your router slightly above your fatty PS3 and you might get 100% signal strength. That's how I got 100% signal strength, anyway. Thing is, I'm also broadcasting off of Airport on my old Mac Mini. It has a very short signal radius, but it's very strong in the small area it does broadcast.

I get loads of disconnects, but i don't think i have ever had an "incompatible with host" error. So we have different issues going on here.

I have seen the disconnected error from two clear situations.

1. being kicked
2. when I shut down my game lobby (I was hosting it) people sent me messages asking why they got "kicked" (they seen the above message). This has only happened once though.
