WWII history buffs, recommend a good (non-fiction) book..

..On the Pacific Theater naval engagements. I'm looking for a big detailed book that has order of battle, charts and pretty illustrations of the battles. The more in-depth the better.

I know there's a lot of WWII buffs here. How about a recommendation?

I have an in-depth book about WWII (Europe) it has maps that you can take out and they look like they have been used and have drawings on them and there are also letters, pass ports, and news papers. If they could do the same thing that would be sweet! HERE is a link for the book that I have.
 
Man, I'm more of an ETO kind of guy.

Actually, most of what I learned about the PTO was from a Time/Life book on the Pacific theatre that my school library had.

Cornelius Ryan was mostly an ETO expert, but maybe he wrote something? There also used to be a whole series of small trade paperbacks that went into some depth on specific WWII topics, but of course I forget the publisher or the name of the series.

Could I be any less helpful?
 
I went to my regional Library and got JUST the book you described..I think it was called WWII in the Pacific...lol

But we have some great Library's here in Phila..I just walk around the history section and pick them out . WW II has tons of books and new one also that have been out for only 4 years or less. They are more removed from the jingoism you may find in the earlier versions.

Those large Time/Life series books with the color pictures are great. My library had a few regarding the war in the Pacific, including one which primarily dealt with the B52s and other long range bombers, and others dealing with other aspects (it's been a while since I read/looked at them). Certainly very interesting, though.

I would agree with ledhead, just poke around the history section of the library and they should have some books. I'll ask my parents the next time I call home to see if they remember the exact name of the book/series.
 
One of the best on the subject is The Two-Ocean War: A Short History of the United States Navy in the Second World War by Samuel Eliot Morison. As should be clear from the title it covers both the war in the Atlantic and Pacific, but most of the US naval action was in the Pacific, and that's what most of the book focuses on. Yes, it's got charts, orders of battle, etc.
Amazon has it in stock.

Morison also wrote the 15-volume History of United States Naval Operations in World War II, but it's a little pricey. I'd love to have it on my bookshelf, though.
