Hi guys,

Can someone please point me in the direction of a tutorial on how to get X-Sim to output gauge data? I've read that you can use something called Servo Commander to stream various data, such as revs, speed, gear, oil temperature and so on through a sound card, but I can't for the life of me work out how to tell it what it's supposed to be doing, the program itself seems to just have some sliders and a choice of sound cards.

The official X-Sim documentation makes it all about as clear as mud, it does a good job of being very vague but doesn't do much else... For a start, where is Profiler 2 in the X-Sim 3.0 Beta directory? I can't find it, and as I said, how do you get Profiler 2 to communicate with Servo Commander, if that is indeed what you're supposed to do? I'm sure some of you have experience with it and I'd really appreciate your help because I'm just really not getting this.

Hopefully when I've worked it out I can make some cool stuff to share with you all, in the end I'd like to design a MOTEC-style LCD display because all of these red 7-Seg LED displays you see do my head in, like the SLI-PRO and I think Sym Projects did a huge monstrosity of a display (they did: http://www.symprojects.com/shop/dlc-247/), or at least something you could use to make one with. I'm wondering if it would be easier to actually buy a DLC-247 and interface with the LCD that way, but I suspect that might involve some tricky microprocessor stuff, it really depends on how it all works. It's probably easier with Servo Commander, once I get it working.

So, yeah, some help would be very much appreciated!
Cheers

With X-Sim you need a telemetry as your data. What game are you going to use? For iRacing telemetry is feed through a sound card and X-Sim. Did I not link the PDF file for you a while back?

Oh, it's for a lot of different sims and games. As I understand you can download profiles that other people have set up, I think I'll mainly be using rFactor but I'd also like it for Simbin titles, RBR... The list goes on, but it doesn't include iRacing.

You did link me the PDF but as I recall it was more of a 'you can use X-Sim to do this' rather than 'to use X-Sim, do this' sort of a guide, which is basically all I can find anywhere. I went back to version 2.something but now I can't get the profiler to run, it shows a spinning thing that looks like it's loading but it doesn't do anything.

Do you use it? If so, do you use it on Windows 7 64-bit? I think if I could get into the profiler I might be able to work it out through trial and error, but getting it to run is proving difficult.

May be way off the mark neema_t but you know x-sim has a gauge option in profiler?
I had a quick look but ended up using iHud for rFactor instead (although I dont really use it much).
I'm not sure how you can output the gauges to another display, if that's what you're after. I'm still building my setup so haven't really got round to worrying about it at the moment.
I should look into it really cos I use a seperate laptop for profiler so I can mess with it without exiting the game but a laptop doesn't really make a great nor practical dashboard :D

Well it seems my main problem is that I can't get Profiler to launch, and I'm trying to basically do this: http://www.x-simulator.de/wiki/Servo_Commander_with_X-Sim_by_Sirnoname but instead of using servos, I want to use the signals as inputs to an Arduino (or similar microcontroller) so I can do stuff with the data before outputting them. In effect I'm trying to do something similar to this: http://www.symprojects.com/shop/simscreen-ss-01/ , but X-Sim doesn't seem to want to run so I'd probably be better off buying one of these anyway. I just don't like the lack of flexibility of off-the-shelf items, while this does look good and you can edit the display, the PCB looks too big to mount where I want it to go so paying £50 for something I can't use the way I'd like to isn't a great deal...

For now though I've made a small T-shaped mount for an iPod Touch running Sin:speed for GTR2, Race 07, GTL, rFactor and a couple of others. X-Sim is apparently compatible with a lot more games, and I don't really like the design of Sin:speed's HUDs, but it'll do for now I suppose. To be honest every weekend I get the itch to get X-Sim working so I can make a quick prototype of something, but then during the week I'm too busy to mess around with it so I forget about it for a week or two and then I'm back to square one again when I come back to it.

Well, really I've never left square one as it just doesn't work on my PC...!

When you say wont run do you mean you cannot actually get profiler to launch?
I've run profiler on win 7 64bit and currently on a vista laptop.

Yeah, I've set it to run as an admin, run it in XP SP3 mode and added it to the data execution prevention ignore list, but it just has a spinning... Thing, I don't know what you'd call them, like the YouTube buffering icon which only ends if I go into the process viewer thing and quit it that way. I'm on Windows 7 64 bit SP1.

I dont know mate..I run it normally in win 7 64 bit. I dont run mine as admin.
The only thing I'd suggest is reinstalling. I honestly don't remember having any issues getting it to run on win 7. On Vista I have to allow UAC each time cos it asks but I dont think Win7 does that anyway.

Hmm, I'll try reinstalling I guess. I've seen diagrams which show two computers, one being used to run X-Sim and the other used to play the game, but surely you don't NEED to have two computers for X-Sim? If so, my laptop has been pretty redundant since the battery completely died (I already have two desktops so a laptop that can't be unplugged is completely useless!) so maybe I could install a Windows OS on it, but it seems crazy that you'd have to have two machines.

I've just thought, can you just run Profiler without anything else running? It's just occurred to me that it might be waiting for a signal from a sim or incoming data from the gaming machine... It's not though, is it? Or is it?

No mate..you dont have to have 2 computers. It's just easier to use 2 only because if you run profiler on the gaming PC, you need to come out of the game to change settings etc on profiler. I run it on a laptop (which was a spare anyway) so I can make changes etc easily.
You dont have to run anything for profiler to start because you can start it to test actuators etc. It just sounds like there's a hiccup somewhere so I'd definately try reinstalling.

Ok, thank you kindly, that's good to know. I'll give it another go tomorrow because I'm at that stage of tired where I'm liable to 'go Hulk' at things that don't agree with what I'm telling them to do...

lol..we all get that sometimes ;) Unfortunately our hobbies usually include some valuable items so an early night is better than a 'hulk' tantrum :D

Hope it works out okay..let us know how you get on.

So I've just uninstalled X-Sim with the uninstaller, re-installed it and it still doesn't work. I'm using version 2.0.8.9 beta, the 'workshop' version, is this the version others are using or should I have gotten the 'online' one? I think I'll go and look for a different version or something.

Edit: Version 3.0 beta is much the same story and it looks like the latest version 2 download is, well, down. They're having server capacity problems on x-simulator.de but x-sim.de only has 3.0 on it, which is useful. However 3.0's 'extractor' is working, I've managed to get it to scan my computer for games and add a couple that it missed and then set a profile to use, but 'X-Sim Converter' which has the same icon as Profiler did in 2.0 is still doing the same thing.

lol..we all get that sometimes ;)

Phew, glad it's not just me!

I've been looking around the x-sim forums mate and only things that sprung to mind:-

1 - need to add profiler to firewall permissions for it to start
2 - need to have a wheel or joystick for profiler to start

Well that'll be it, then! Firewall did block something X-Sim was trying to do but when the window popped up I clicked on allow, but I haven't got my wheel over here as my PC is at my desk and my wheel is set up in front of my TV... I kind of expected it to let me run it anyway.

I've double checked the firewall settings and it's definitely allowing X-Sim through, but it won't run with a 360 controller plugged in (kind of counts as a joystick, right?). I might actually have to stop being lazy, get up and move my PC! I'll post again when I've done that.

Edit: Where are my manners? Thank you kindly for looking on my behalf, steve, very much appreciated!

Edit again: Well, 3.0 still isn't working even with the Convertor and Extractor (Profiler and Force Sender) added to the firewall bypass list and my G27 plugged in. I'm just going to do some, er, scientific tests to make sure the G27 is definitely working, a lap or two of the Nurburgring in rFactor should do it. Then I'll install 2.0.8.9 again and see if I have more luck with that. If that still doesn't work I'll go and make an account over on X-Sim's own forums and hope they can help.

Edit again again: 2.0.8.9 doesn't run either. When I've moved my PC back to my desk I'll go about asking on their forums I suppose, it seems odd that I can't see anything there about this issue... Must be something up with my computer I suppose. Oh well!

Surprised their isn't a simple guide "on using this".

I've looked over the manual and would consider it for tactile too but it just looks to be a bit of a nightmare from a beginners perspective. Their are some guys that I'm sure are using it on other forums that may be willing to lend you a hand.

Curious as to how it will perform compared to "game audio tactile" but have not found conversations/discussion on the topic. Certainly would like to read/understand more about it myself. Shame it does not support "rumble" effects in the track however.

I do not have tactile connected at the moment or even games installed to use it but the app certainly runs for me (win7 ultimate)

Have just installed B3.
Seems to be running okay, will be using for creating a dedicated tactile channel; oh yeah.

Ah, Just read the last reply properly, there is a plug-in for tactile.
If you google iRacing tactile there is a magically pdf that explains all, even with clicky things.

neema...any update from you? Did you get this sorted?

I'm at the stage where I'm now looking at gauges so interested to see if you managed to sort x-sim and output gauges at all.

I've not seen any sections on these forums that deal with 'virtual dash/gauges' so perhaps may start one to see what else people use anyway :)

No, sorry Steve, I put it on the back burner for now because I have to do the triple monitor thing first, then the button panel. I'm using sin:speed for gauges at the moment, it's not quite as flexible as I'd like (I really need temperature gauges for the HistorX GT/TC rFactor mod, engines keep blowing...) but it will do for some time, in fact I'd completely forgotten about Xsim... Maybe I will try again when I've got an afternoon free.
