X360 movie formats

Hey,

I'm not sure if it's my console to blame, I have the latest dash from 2014 anyway, haven't updated anything since then.

Here's the issue: my X360 gives a "format not supported" message every time I try to play a clip in avi, flv, mpeg or any other common video format.

I'm just downloading a 4.7 GB movie at the moment, and wondering if I should get a USB or not so I can watch it on my console.

What formats DOES the X360 support?

I found a list. Might be the console itself but it could be where the video would be supported but audio is not or vice versa.

From Xbox site "From USB storage device to xbox 360 dashboard video player would support the following.
  • WMV (unprotected)
  • MPEG4
  • H.264
  • AVI
Below is what is needed for each file that can play.

Generally, Xbox 360 supports the following for AVI:
•File Extensions: .avi, .divx
•Containers: AVI
•Video Profiles: MPEG-4 Part 2, Simple & Advanced Simple Profile
•Video Bitrate: 5 Mbps with resolutions of 1280 x 720 at 30fps.
•Audio Profiles: Dolby® Digital 2 channel and 5.1 channel, MP3
•Audio Max Bitrate: No restrictions.

File Extensions: .mp4, .m4v, mp4v, .mov
•Containers: MPEG-4, QuickTime

•Video Bitrate: 10 Mbps with resolutions of 1920 x 1080 at 30fps.
•Audio Profiles: 2 channel AAC low complexity (LC)
•Audio Max Bitrate: No restrictions.

Xbox 360 supports the following for MPEG-4:
File Extensions: .mp4, .m4v, .mp4v, .mov
•Containers: MPEG-4, QuickTime

•Video Bitrate: 5 Mbps with resolutions of 1280 x 720 at 30fps.

Xbox 360 supports the following for WMV:
•File Extensions: .wmv
•Container: asf
•Video Profiles: WMV7 (WMV1), WMV8 (WMV2), WMV9 (WMV3), VC-1 (WVC1 or WMVA) in simple, main, and advanced up to Level 3
•Video Bitrate: 15 Mbps with resolutions of 1920 x 1080 at 30fps.
•Audio Profiles: WMA7/8, WMA 9 Pro (stereo and 5.1), WMA lossless
•Audio Max Bitrate: No restrictions.

Thanks a lot mate!

THough my console does not even run mp4 clips! It says a media update is needed before it can be played.

It's been giving me the same message since I got it in 2010, even though I've been updating my dashboard right up until 2014.

Only way to play movies is stream them off my PC.. which is interesting, since apparently, I now need Windows Media Center Edition OS on my Win XP system.

I think I'm ready to give up.. :banghead:
