interesting to see BMW testing in Dubai sands maybe would drive well off road as on road (as well as a SUV can)

PS: did a search for the old X6 thread but couldn't find it , and there are only 4 pages of the Auto news forum and it isn't there

The old thread was deceiving, from these side on pics, I now don't really like the look of it. Body looks like a horrible mix of too stubby and tall for me.

I don't believe they're actually building this thing. I have been calling BS since the day I saw spy shots. The X3 is a sales dud - this will be even worse.

well they wouldn't be testing it in Dubia if they weren't making it , and according to the BMW dealer here which I went to today this should arrive at Saudi in June 2008

Personally I think BMW should have stopped with just the X5, which I kinda like. The X3 is not a pretty thing to look at, and I now question this X6.

BMW should concentrate on making the current 7 series look good like its old E38 cousin.

Hey, I've just figured out what that profile shot reminds me of...

Good call BMW. :dunce: :yuck:

Seriously though, what in god's name is this thing? BMW have taken all the impracticality from a swoopy coupe body (rear seats only suitable for oompa-loompas), combined it with the horrendous "vertically stretched car" look from the Cayenne (and the odd proportions that entails), added a dash of flame surfacing and chucked it all in a blender with the new CR-V's front end and some branches from the ugly tree. Ugh.

I prefer the 6-series to that, I really do.

On the money, the above quote is perfectly correct.
Beyond that, I just don't like the appearance of the new car. All I can guess is that the boys at BMW want to run the Dakar rally with something new and even uglier than what the competition runs. :indiff:

Btw, I agree with JammyOzzy... Pontiac Aztec all the way. :yuck:

Dubia? You mean Dubai, right? or am I off on this?

It's the unholy matrimony of an E90 3-series, a CLS, and an Eagle SX/4.

In other words, BMW builds an Eagle...and fails miserably.

Fugly, BMW seems to be heading in the wrong ass direction so far this century.

Round out the roof a little and make it less tall and then we'll talk.

As for testing in the sands, ewww. BMWs are built for the road. SUVs are built for the highway. Why are they wasting road potential for the ability to go off road which will never be used?

I kinda like the look of this X6... its like a jacked up saloon.

Oh and I love Dubai... its literally where you want something built and you have enough dosh... it happens!

can you explain that?

can you explain that?

Maybe it's more in the crossover side of things, but SUVs really don't see much off road time. It just doesn't seem like manufacturers put a lot of effort into making their SUV go in the dirt. And why would they? They can say it is off road capable, but I'm sure your average RX330 is built to be driven on the street. It'll sell better that way anyway.

That doesn't mean that there aren't any good off-roaders out there. Wranglers are pretty good. I have heard good things about the Cheyenne/Tuareg and the Land Rovers and I'm sure there are a few more out there.

This is their R-Class competitor, no?

Now, I may be crazy, but I kinda like the R-Class... It at least makes some sense to me. This BMW however, not so much. We'll see what they end up doing, but thus far, I do not approve.

I don't think it's an R-Class competitor. The Merc's a heavy, glorified minivan. This... uh, it's an "off-road four-door coupe" with road-biased handling?

I think it might have something to do with Dakar if they're testing it on the sands, and that makes sense... but I really can't think of anyone who will want this. People who want vulgar, giant SUV's want an X5 or Disco, people who wants sports cars will get a coupe. BMW may be good, but I don't think they can mix the M3 with an X5 with any kind of success. And why'd the silver one jack some Focus rims?

Come to think of it though, throw the V10 at this and it'd be an hilariously absurd way to shock people on the road.

Am I the only one looking at that and thinking:

"I like it better than the X3... Intriguing.... a sports-cross concept that might actually see the light of day..."

I mean, I was hoping Mitsubishi would build a Paris-Dakar Pajero for the road... this looks like it might come close...

------

Building an SUV that can go off-road but probably won't is just like designing an SUV that can do 0-60 in 5 seconds and lap the Nurb in slightly more time than your typical sports car... people probably won't do those things, but they want something that can.

To each their own... especially if you're buying what is essentially a useless, overweight alternative to a perfectly good minivan...

Oh, let’s take the one redeeming quality that SUVs have for suburbanites – cargo space – and chop it out.

There’s lovable stupid, like TVR, and then there’s just stupid stupid, like this stupid piece of stupid.

Or you could look at it as:

"Let's address the one big issue with sportscars... which is ground clearance..."... :D :D :D

FAO: BMW - Just because there's a gap in the market, it doesn't mean it needs filling.

My sports car has no problem with ground clearance.....

Isn't that the truth....

Come to think of it, there are a few companies who should be told this.

The X6 makes the Cayenne look like a paragon of automotive integrity.
:yuck:

This thing is one of the weirdest conundrums. People think of SUVs as big cars. Well, THIS is a big car. The design is strange, but (believe it or not) I applaud BMW for this unusual design. I always thought the X-series of BMW SUVs were peppy and capable "sports activity vehicles." The overall look of this machine is that of... well, a big car. It has that sedan look while in a massive body. I actually applaud that soemone came up with such a design. It's labeled an SUV, but honest-to-God looks like a big car. I just think it's a unique design. Just my own personal view. I dont know too much about it on the grounds of performance to actually make a comment.

Those pictures are of the desert testing. Here's some more pictures of the BMW X6 in case you want to see better photos of the car/SUV: < http://www.leftlanenews.com/bmw-x6.html >. Wonder how this would do in about three to five years...

But... can you park on curbs? :dopey:

Isn't that the truth....

Give me an "M"! Give me a "B"!

Oh lordy, somebody save me! I'm beginning to like it even more!

Plain mact-of-the-fatter is: I don't really like SUVs... but a more car-like alternative to the all-terrain vehicle is quite appealing to me... heck... they should've made the X3 like this... oh, wait... they already did: the 330xi. Why they felt they had to make a stiffer, uglier and taller version of the 3 is beyond me... they could have just stuck a slightly taller suspension under the 3-series and dubbed it the X3 and it would have sold better at one-tenth the development cost.

I'm sure I could if I wanted to. Just none of those gargantuan mini-walls that they put up these days.

I..... Actually...... Feel the same way???:guilty:

Seems we agree on everything:lol:. I remember thinking the X5 was pretty cool when it came out, maybe because it and the ML were the only German SUVs out here. I also remember the X3 being quite meh, but then again, I never had much exposure to it. But I think you are right that a good X3 could have been like the XC70 or the All-road thing.
