xbox 360's graphics will be as fast as PS3

360's graphical core speed can "easily" counter PS3's supposed superiority says ATi

15:54 Numbers - the public loves them. Bigger equals better. It's one of the reasons Xbox 360 is called Xbox 360 rather than Xbox 2. Stack an Xbox 2 next to a PS3 on a shop shelf, and which is you average punter going to think is better? And this is similarly the case with Xbox 360 and PS3 graphical core speeds, reckons ATi - but we shouldn't allow ourselves to be blinded by what's written down on paper.

Xbox 360's Xenos graphical core runs at 500Mhz. PS3's nVidia-developed RSX graphical core runs at 550Mhz. However, ATi's Richard Huddy, whose job is talking to developers about the company's technology, says that the Xbox 360's unique graphical architecture quite capably makes up for the apparent shortfall between the two core speeds.

"That mere 10% clock speed that RSX has on Xenos is easily countered by the unified shader architecture that we've implemented," is the word from Huddy in an interview with website Bit-tech.net.

Dipping further into technical details, Huddy says that "Rather than separate pixel and vertex pipelines, we've created a single unified pipeline that can do both. Providing developers throw instructions at our architecture in the right way, Xenos can run at 100% efficiency all the time, rather than having some pipeline instructions waiting for others."

He highlights high-end PC power in comparison, saying that high-end PC chips typically run at between 50% and 60% efficiency.

Bit-tech.net has also questioned Huddy on how the two next-gen consoles' CPU architecture will affect general brute grunt and graphical power. His response is that, while PS3 with seven Cell cores appears to have considerable CPU power, the real bottleneck lies in the graphical side of things.

Huddy talks about the current trend in the CPU world of going "multi-threaded and multi-core" (think CPU's processing things very, very fast; Xbox 360 has three PowerPC cores, incidentally), saying that while "writing multi-threaded apps for two or three cores is difficult... Doing it for seven separate cores, when the main core has a slightly different feature-set from the other six, is very, very difficult."

Or in other words, PS3 presents developers with a far more difficult challenge than Xbox 360.

Huddy also reckons that because PS3's RSX graphical core isn't unified - i.e. it doesn't feature unified vertex and pixel pipelines - "PS3 will almost certainly be slower and less powerful."

Potential corporate willy waving aside, at the end of the day does power really matter, or is it more about the gameplay offered by videogames featuring on the machines? Or does more brute processing power equal better gameplay? As ever, our forums are open for discussion below.

Don't post dumb articles anymore, seriously.

Just go read and stop presenting everyone with this media hype. This is the reason people get "let down".

Not trying to be an ass, it's just rediculous to keep putting gasoline on the fire.

I believe it, ATi makes some great products.
But I'm happy either way, these consoles seem to both be great. I can wait to get my hands on both of them. Obviously, they'll both have some "must-have" titles. 👍

Nice post cobragt! :)

con, I'm just posting the article. I'm taking what this article is saying as a grain of salt. I think it's foolish of ATI to say the ps3 will be less powerful and slower, that is ATI's assumption, reason why I dont trust them.

ATi are saying that it will be easier to get to 100% efficiency with the XB360 than the PS3, at the end of the day it's all speculation and hype, E3 was a massive dissapointment for MS especially having their conference on the same night as Sony's. Their initial plans were to see what Sony say's then at their conference say, look at ours, it's better. They were unable to do that. MS even had a seating area, behind the platform with people hired to cheer at every announcment and detail about the new XB.

Judging by the way MS keep on saying this and that is better than the PS3 I suspect its all hype......or a coverup for a mess up!

Company A will always say their product is better than company B's and vice versa. It's not like Sony are sitting back, they've been slagging of the XB360 too you know. In EDGE magazine, one Sony guy said how suprised he was that the XB360 was so under powered and went through a list of reasons why i's no good, or something along thoes lines. The slanging match is a two way thing, MS arn't any more evil conspirators than Sony, it just looks like Sony actually have the better product this time around.

What is the point of topics like these? Are you trying to start arguements on which will be "superior"? Both consoles have shown that they will have equal capabilities. I'm basing this on real life computers on the market now. Having a 1ghz faster processor is now a negligible difference in the overall capabilities of a game. I'd be very hard pressed to believe that xbox360 will have a faster video card than ps3 (or vice versa). The reason is because both Nvidia and ATI are going to be using the same generation of video cards on the console. Xbox no longer has the graphical advantage of being out a few years later than ps2 did. Both will be out within months of eachother. Both will use same generation hardware. PS3 will offer gaming just as beautiful as Xbox 360 and Nintendo Revolution will hopefully keep up.

These arguments are really stupid and annoying. Even more annoying is the damn media hype. It's nothing more than a dick waving contest where each of them tries to say theirs is bigger. I hope to have an article written up about this annoying hype sooner or later.

In a way, Microsoft are very hypocritical when it comes to all this jibba-jabba. They say not to believe the common-ground inferences (i.e., what's better on paper, and what we know is statistically more "powerful") when it comes to the gpus. However, they are so quick to bash the Cell and claim their cpu to be superior because of that same belief they're denying to be true with the gpus.

So, what does that lead the consumer to believe? Based on their logic, they're basically either admiting that their cpu or gpu is inferior...but they don't want to come out and say that. Does that mean they're equal? No, it means they're full of ****.

"Sega realized though that Sony was releasing the Playstation at the same time and decided to gamble and get the Saturn on store shelves 4 months early. Not only did the announcement take third-party software developers by surprise, but it also meant that Sony would have more time to put some finishing touches on their Playstation, draw up a well-planned strategy and learn from the pitfalls of the Saturn."

Could history reapeat itseff?

"One thing that Sony did on release of the Playstation was to slash its price to $299, making it $100 cheaper than the Saturn. This move, along with much better marketing than that of Sega of America, reaped havoc on the Saturn's place in the market and ultimately caused its annihilation (sorry)"

M$ will have better(more $$$) marketing but with 90milion PS's out there the fan base is pretty much set....

I dont think so, but I do believe there will be much more PS3s sold. Kind of how it is now. Lots of people own xboxes but much more own PS2s. I bet it'll stay about the same. Time will tell though!

That is suggest to contradiction.

I agree that Microsoft has more marketing...in the US!
Sony owns the market in the other countries, Eruope may be a split but other than that I don't think there is such a marketing difference between the two.

So why is microsoft only coming in now to mention their system is better than sony's ps3 and taking a shot at the nvidia graphics processor - ken kutaragi has said from the beginning the ps3 will be the better system, in what looked to be a one way argument - basicly saying sony's ps3 will be a supercomputer and 360 will be no match, this was like few weeks ago, and i think microsoft has noticed alot of xbox fans even stating their veiw on how they think ps3 will be the better machine - this is why i think microsoft has came out with this statement to backup their machines potential - i still think the ps3 will be better and im no fanboy i will own both systems on release but i still believe sony will be bigger and better than microsoft this time around

AT the end of the day, it's the software that will decide which console is best.

Yup, good games sell the console...not the best graphics.

XBox360 won't hold a candle to PS3 in terms of graphics...
Doesn't matter, though. The games I want to play are going to be on the PS3.

Most of the ones I wan't to play will be, I'll want to play PGR3 and Forza 2, but thats about it one the XB360. Theres loads of games due to come out for the PS3 I wan't.

All I would want on a 360 was Forza 2.............nothing else.......which is why its a PS3 for me! :)

why dont u just go have sex with your xbox instead of posting all these stupid articles?

half the posts here are u dissing on the ps3 in one form or another

nickmp0wer, at least with the xbox you got something to hold on too...I mean shut the hell up man! Xbox rules your bases.

And cobra isn't an Xbox fanboy, all he did was post some articles. Get over it.

Aaah, fanboyisms. The #1 reason I avoid these pits of media propaganda spread directly from the mouths of the people who actually think they have enough knowledge and experience in the field of gaming and hardware to know every detail of these unreleased pieces of hardware when in truth, all you've got are numbers and slander provided by the manufacturer themselves.

why all the hostility about it, anyway? I'll be buying a ps3 and probably a revolution. I'm content with my decision, and I don't really care what others get.

Microsoft is on my bad list though, as all they seem to care about it bashing the competition... Something which is NOT really helping consumers make a wise choice.

I don't care about MS bashing the cometition, if the better games end up on tghe XB360 I'll get it. I'm generally not as interested in Nintendo titles so I've provisionally ruled out the Revolution, but we'll see. The PS3 is gaurenteed purchase for me because I already know I'tll have GT5, MGS4 and others I've seen glimpses of being released on it. Forza 2 isn't enough to warrant me buying an XB360 so I'll have to see what else it gets that interests me.

Basically everyone will be making games for both xbox360 and ps3 so there will be almost no difference graphically.

Maybe mad money Gates will even pay KAZ a few Mill to put GT5 on XBOX (Welcome to the dark side, its much brighter over here)

1) No, not everyone will be making games for both systems. Because of the greater differences in the architecture of these two, most games will be made for only one console, and we'll see a reduction in the number of multi-platform games that are made.

2) GT will never appear on anything other than Playstation. Ever. No matter how much money Microsoft has. GT is a first-party title. It's owned entirely by Polyphony Digital, who is owned entirely by Sony.

Agreed 100%, we'll still see games like Fifa and Madden appearing multi platform, but they won't be as direct ports as they are on PS2 and XB. And No GT will not be on anything but a Sony product, and even if MS hire Kaz (should Sony ever release his contract and fire him), he couldn't make the GT series for them because Kaz doesn't own PD, he's just the president.
