I turned on my 360 the other day and saw a notification on the start menu saying I can have Gold Membership for free for one month. When I clicked on it, it also says that after the 30 days are up, I have to pay $9.99 a month.

Does this mean I keep Gold and just have to pay $10 a month or is it like, for example, student loans where it's a monthly late fee?

$10 a month for Gold is extortionate, over a year that works out to roughly 3 times what I'm paying in the UK by buying digital codes from online retailers. I definitely recommend buying in bigger chunks from non-Microsoft sellers if you're looking to save money in the long run and have the funds available right now.

I'm not quite sure what you mean with the student loan bit but the payment system is basically you get charged $10 automatically every month on your card, even if you don't use Xbox Live during this time you'll get charged because it covers the month after payment, if you would prefer you can go in to account settings and take auto-renew off so you're not automatically charged each month and can instead choose when you want to renew your Gold. To keep your XBL Gold you pay at the beginning of each time, so if you pay on the 1st January this will renew your membership for the rest of January, so your Gold would run out on 1st February or thereabouts rather than being the payment to cover Decembers Gold.

Hopefully something in that answers the question, if not let me know. Also I have a 14 day Xbox Live Gold trial code if you're interested. I believe they only work if you don't already have a paid subscription so it's no use to me.
