Ok, so I am borrowing my freinds Xbox for a few days, and all is good, when today...

I was switching from "Enter the Matrix" to "Splinter Cell," and when I put in the new disk and it starts making this sound like the disk is not clearing something inside the console.

I pop the disk out, and it looks ok, but whenever I try to play a game or DVD or whatever, it makes the same sound, like somethings broken. The best way I can describe the sound is like there is a gremlin in the Xbox that beats his head against the disk tray when the disk is spinning. The faster the disk spins, the faster he hits his head.

I hope nothings broken, but what is this sound and how do I fix it?

Thanks for reading my post.

How old is the xbox? I mean, when did he purchase it? I'm asking because the older models came with a garbage Phillips dvd drive that had frequent DDE (dirty disk error) related problems. My first xbox was like that, making wierd clicking noises, so i traded it in for a new one that has a much quieter, more reliable Samsung unit. Since you just borrowed the box from your friend, give it back to him like nothing happened and hope it occured BEFORE you borrowed it.

Did it say the disk was dirty / damaged ?

Mine does it all the time at the moment. just keep opening and closing the drawer and it gets their in the end. I've tried a cleaning disk but that doesn't seem to help.

Suppose its good old value for money from uncle Bill !

MY box makes that sound all the time. Its usually with rented games. Its like a fast clicking. I found out that it was actually the sticker they put on the disc, the corners come up a tiny bit and slowly come off enough to hit something inside. Plus I think my fan is unbalanced cause sometimes it vibrates like crazy. Nothing I'm worried about though.

Sorry for not replying sooner, I thought this thread had died already

It turns out that something had jostled one of the bearings loose, so its not a major fix.

Now my PS2 is busted, I tried to change the laser power by adjusting the two resistors, and now its not reading anything. I think its just one of the ribbon cables not staying put, but Im to lazy right now to do anyhthing about it. Thats a problem for the PS2 forum, though.
Right now, I am suffering the stuck-to-the chair syndrom for the 3nd time today, theres no possible way for me to get up. help me!

Edit: I GOT UP! Im so proud of myslef, lol

ive had mad problems with my xbox. first problem i had was about 6 months after i bought it the eject button somehow got stuck down causing the unit to poen with the slightest jolt, then i got the ddr error and some games were un playable, now worst of all i changed disks fom halo to forza and as soon as i closed the disc drive and the motor on the drive didnt connect with the disc or something it made this horrible sound then stopped it sounded like the disc wasnt spinning or anything. and of course this had to happen after all the xbox help line people went to bed so im calling them in the morning. but the last time i called them they hung up on me and i was treated like ****. if anyone know how i can ge this fixed for cheap and easy because in poor and when it comes to electronics im a retard but i think i can handle the drive changing. im so sick of how nazi-ish the microsoft company is about their products "its all user fault, we dont make mistakes, we're perfect. now send us money you twatt." if they dont deal with me right im setting my xbox on fire and video taping it and sending it straight to mr. gates with the molten system.

Edit: I just talked to the Xbox help line for about an hour and I got them to fix it for free and I get a year warranty, so im happy and nothing molten will be shipped to the Gates estate.
