Xbox more popular than the PS2 in the U.S. now?

:sly: Before I even get this started, lets it be known that I'm not an Xbox fanboy, nor a PS2 fanboy, or a Gamecube fanboy. In all honesty, I'm more like a Genesis/SNES/NeoGeo/Arcade fanboy more than anything, but still. Anyhow, let me get this started,...

Lately, I've been noticing that more and more 'big' exclusives here in the states have been coming out on Xbox, not PS2 and/or Gamecube. It's a bit surprising not seeing games like Outrun 2 and Outlaw Golf on Gamecube (whatnot with it's recent resurgence), but it's VERY surprising not seeing these same games and others like them coming out for the PS2. More and more stuff like those games, Fable, Doom 3, Halo 2, Conker, and others are planned for Xbox-only, and it's now gotten to a point where I'm planning on getting an Xbox this year. Now I know what you may be thinking: Why does this matter? Well, it matters because many of these big games are generally big hits here in the U.S., and the U.S. is the most profitible market for gaming (hell, it's gonna get even MORE profitible here in the next five years or so). Another thing that I've noticed is that, with multiplatform games, usually the Xbox version gets the best marks, and the vast majority of celebrities are now more pro-Xbox than pro-PS2 and pro-Gamecube. This is a HUGE gain for Microsoft as they've somehow managed to seep into the American gaming concisnious that the Xbox is getting the biggest play overall now, versus the PS2, which has been seeing less and less top-tier exclusives. Now I know that many are still thinking that this doesn't prove at ALL that Xbox is more popular than the PS2 here now, whatnot with the fact that the PS2 still has more consoles sold than its competitors. But just look at it like this: the PS1 had more units sold than the N64, and yet the N64 had more Top-Five hits on a regular basis. See where I'm goin' at here? I'm saying that, yes, the PS2 has more units sold, but the Xbox's increased popularity here over the current popularity of the PS2 means that more people might be intrigued to get the next Xbox versus the next PlayStation, and I think that's the point that Microsoft has grasped, but Sony hasn't, which is gonna cost Sony BIG TIME in the next console race. Microsoft's thinking ahead, while Sony's still thinking here & now, and the Xbox now has a good avantage over the PS2 in terms of which REALLY signifies 'cool' and 'tough' because of that. But that's just my opinion. What do you guys think? :sly:

Well,i agree and disagree.Recent polls by various bureau's show that in the US the X-Box is more popular(currenty) but in Europe and Japan the PS2 is way more popular then both consoles(X-Box and GCN).So yeah, the X-Box is more popular in the US will wich probably start selling better around the time Halo 2 gets released. However, look at what's comming for the PS2:Gran Turismo 4,Metal Gear Solid 3,GTA San Andreas,Final Fantasy XII,Ace Combat 05,Tekken 5,these are all top quality games. So i don't think that the X-Box will ever beat the PS2(popularity wise).

And PS2 sales are dropping also (so i heard).

Mainy because everyone has a PS2. ;)

It's not that Xbox is more popular, it's PS2 sales are starting to lag due to over-saturation.

Your neighbor has one, my cousin has one, your sister's boyfriend has one... that's the same story with the PS2.

Xbox has only been on the market a short time and has enough software support and people heard good/bad things about it and it only really started catching on as the price dropped.

Some people are just bored with their PS2 and got something different for the time being..

Sony should acknowledge the fact the PS3 is long over-due. The Gamecube + Xbox both are next-gen systems, 1 gen past PS2.

I don't think Sony is doing badly, they have another 2 yrs of solid software sales but if they don't push the PS3 out by then, they can get in trouble...

I think good points are being made. The PS2 has pretty much maxed out its market and will begin to slow. Though I don't think this means we need the PS3 just yet. We need more really great games to come out - about one a month for the next two years.

Also, the XBox has been really slow since the day it was released. I'm sure it's just now becoming really popular with people seeing Halo 2 being the best game ever. They want in on the action.

And as for the games you gave as examples, they're Microsoft games. They're Only On XBox for a reason (: Just like the Gran Turismo series, Final Fantasy series, and various other PS2 only titles are owned by Sony.

Don't view this as "oh, the XBox is suddenly better than the PS2. I must buy one now!" Nothing has changed. I would wait for the next run of consoles.

I don't think anything will ever surpass the PS2 this generation. But your comment about the Xbox and Cube being next-gen is incorrect. Just because the PS2 was released earlier doesn't mean it is last gen.

It doesn't help that games that used to be exclusive to Playstation are now appearing on the other consoles. What's wrong with that I hear you say? Well I suppose that these games were benchmarks in PS history eg Final fantacy, Resident evil, Pes, recent Mgs gamesAND Ridge racer. It seems Nintendo and Microsoft are taking credit for what Sony has been achieving for 10 years now. Nintendo have recently released the first MGS which was out 6 years ago and Xbox have Son's of liberty and Substance. Nintendo now have Final fantacy crappy cristal chronicles and Resident Evil aswell. X box has Pes 4 which stangely Nintendo doesn't. Can't they develop their own games without relying on developers leaving Sony to raise their standards. For god's sake Nintendo even need Sonic the hedgehog and a host of Sega games boost their ratings which is sad.

Only up unti the PS3 arrives. Then MS will release the X crate or X contaner and try to knock Sony off the top, but it will never happen.

I'm a Sony fan
That's the 2nd time I've heard someone say that on these forums recently. What does it mean? I can understand being a fan of a sports team or of games and movies you love, but a "fan" of an electronics corporation? What a bizarre idea!

The US is certainly the biggest market for the Xbox. But as for exclusivity of games most exclusives for the Xbox comes from developers that Microsoft own or part own. Others like Doom 3 are PC converts, far more suited for the Xbox.
Interestingly since the new slimline PS2 has come out sales have increased. Here in the UK they've run out. We have to wait until early December to get anymore!

And yes, I think there are a lot of peolpe who own an Xbox and PS2 and sales of the Xbox probably reflect this. I am going to get one in the New Year and I'm sure there are plenty of others who already own a PS2 who have recently or intend to purchase an Xbox. Games like Halo 2 also help a lot.
Still, I'm uncertain what the overall sales are of all three machines.

P.S. If anything the Gamecube seems to be suffering the most with Capcom recently stating that Resident Evil 4 (or Biohazard 4) will be released on the PS2. Then again Namco have decided to release Tekken 5 on all consoles, possibly to do with the success of Soul Calibur 2 which was also released on all consoles.

Well take a look at the specs and repeat what you just said...

It does sound strange but I too would say I'm a "Sony fan". I like what they do. I think they make good products. I support them with my money because of it. I'm also hessitant to give Microsoft my money. I don't regret buying an XBox and my handful of games. I did get most of them at a discount (Halo / Halo 2 exceptions). But when I have the choice I will buy games for PS2 before XBox.

There is always some kind of brand loyalty involved in the decisions people make when purchasing stuff. This is usually most often seen with food and clothing etc. Hi-tec stuff are not immune to this brand loyalty. Brand loyalty is very strong in Japan for example. But it can be seen any and everywhere. You'd think that people would make decisions on buying video games (or at least the console itself) on information and facts. Yet strangely the name alone can make all the difference.
It is a bit strange....but then people are!

You take a look at the specs yourself. The PS2 is 50-100 times more powerful than the original Playstation. That's the kind of difference that makes a generation. The Xbox hardly has twice the power of the PS2, and in practice the differences turn out somewhat less. Generally, when say a company like EA brings out games that are virtually the same for more than one console, that should be a hint for you that those consoles are of the same generation. GameCube, Xbox, and PS2 are current generation consoles. Xbox2 and PS3 will form the next generation.

And lets all hope Nintendo stays in the business and releases something wonderful. God forbid that the two giants are left to run our toys by themselves.

I remember thinking the same thing about Nintendo in the early to mid 90's.

"No one will ever beat Nintendo!"

They certainly aren't on top anymore.

Never say never. Especially when talking about technological advancements.
