XP could be easily updated if they incorporated this:

Safety rating like in Iracing + difficulty of cars being drivin + what assists are used+how much you were challenged in the race(did you blaze through, or did you fight your opponents?) + track difficulty + lap time + what tires you used(affects difficulty) = total XP gained from that race.


And as for XP itself, it's ridiculous that they just have you go up to level 40. Once everyone is there, what's left? Have it reset after reaching the limit and let that add to a driver ranking. Like Prestige in Modern Warfare.

And all those points I added at the top that add to XP, the servers for online use that to match you with other players at your level.
 
i dont think your level has anything to do with your skill just how much you played
 
What I don't understand with XP is this, you get to LVL40 so you can do the last endurance race and XP is not counted anymore yet you get millions of XP for winning, why? It's like PD just did not think about that, also I do agree with the OP that XP should be awarded dependant on various factors, but more to do with the car setup rather than the track difficulty or lap time.
