I have just finished building my new pc and have installed a really bare XP pro on it. I want to add the service packs. My question is: Do I need to install SP1 and then SP2 or is SP2 culmative? I am downloading these at work to take home as I don't yet have an internet connection. I have already downloaded winzip, itunes and media player. Does anyone have any suggestions for more programs that might be useful at home?

Thanks

Duncan

P.S If anyone could reccomend a good (and free!) antivirus/firewall software, that would also be appreciated.

SP2 is cumulative...

AVG is free for home users, and is an excellent AV solution - Grisoft - in English :)

I know nothing of firewalls - The one in SP2 supposedly isn't all that bad..

Remember Ad-aware as well !....

SP2 is a cumulative patch, so you should be fine without applying SP1. I don't know a free antivirus since I use Norton AV Corporate Edition (best I've seen so far), but ZoneAlarm isn't bad for a free firewall.

Toyomatt strongly reccomends "Avast!" Personally, I use Norton Corporate like jpmontoya

I use Norton Corporate as well. Helps to work for a corporation (:

However, there was a news release recently that stated a certain security hole in NAV. Apparently it can be used to excecute code rather than prevent it ... hmmmmm.

Thanks for the Antivirus/Firewall suggestions 👍. For the moment I will go for AVG and SP2 firewall.

Now. Does anyone have any suggestions for downloadable programs i.e. Mediaplayer, Itunes. Or Games i.e. Live for speed?

Note: the above examples I have already downloaded!

K Lite Mega codec pack
Ok, this thing is the codec pack. It even has non crappy versions of real and quicktime. Includes Media player classic (like the old non bloated version 6) and BSPlayer.

Foobar is an insanely un-intuitive media player, but it's good.

Rip cd's *****! It also combines with the Lame mp3 encoding system that is included with the K-Lite codec pack

Usefull free DVD burning util.

All that stuff is free holmes. You crazy ealing bastard.

it includes the codecs for realplayer, not the program itself. That makes it pretty sweet since you can still watch real media stuff but never have to worry about downloading that oversized pile of spyware :)

Yes, Avast! seems to be the most proficient out of all the Anti-Virus programs that I have tested. AVG is also nice, but lacking a self-update feature and a rather bulky resource tag is why I prefer Avast!. Also, Avast! is awarded for being one of the best Anti-Virus programs available.

Codec packs are garbage. 👎

Media Player Classic can view most videos without the need for codecs to be installed anyway. So, unless you're going to be encoding your own videos in a thousand different formats, why bother?

Oh, and you get LAME MP3 compiles here. Just extract the lame.exe file somewhere and tell EAC to use that.

Infact I do find it useful because I can encode video in muliple formats.
