Once again I am surprised at the prevailing vapidity of the average internet user, or more specifically, the average Yahoo! user. These are the top ten Yahoo! searches of 2003, in ascending order.

  • KaZaA
  • Eminem
  • Harry Potter
  • WWE
  • American Idol
  • Paris Hilton
  • Britney Spears
  • NASCAR
  • 50 Cent
  • Christina Aguilera

So what's your take on this?

With all due respect, Eric: What surprises me is that you're actually surprised at the results.

After letting it sink in I, too, am surprised that I am surprised.

Pop-culture, what's there to say?
Nothing out of the ordinary.

Disappointing, yes, but not unexpectedly so.

I'm a Yahoo! user and the only thing I look up are car sites, car pictures, and car specs. That's my only use for the search function. Then again, I normally use Google anyway.

Exactly. I'm sure that searches for certain types of cars, bad movies about over-designed and vomit-inducing-painted cars, and racing simulators are right up in the mix with the GTPlanet crew.

I'm sure what's-her-face only has the hits because a sex tape about her on the net somewhere. You couldn't go three pages on the net back in '98 without someone shouting "Pamela Anderson sex vid!" on their freakin' site.

Yeah, the lack of porn caught my eye also. I presume that the list is "filtered".

What amazes me is that people will go to a search engine and search for something rather than just trying "www.<name>.com".

That list doesn't suprise me one bit. Almost everybody I know is a YAHOO!er and thats basically what they look up. I'm sure Buzbo had something to do with the Paris Hilton part.

I've never searched for any of those things on Yahoo! Isn't Paris Hilton a hotel anyway?

Mind you, Yahoo! searches stopped working at all for me about 3 months back.

That is very interesting statistics...search engine searches say a lot about the type of people who use them. Not suprisingly, the Google Zeitgeist shows that its users are a bit more mature.

I'm really not all that surprised. The list of top ten searches are also the top ten things you'll see on television. I would be interested in seeing how the search numbers taper off after number ten.

 I didn't think people even searched for pornography using search engines anymore. What do you need search engines for when you have file sharing programs? :sly:
