After much deliberation, I just bought myself a Nintendo DS (white Special Edition). It was between that and a PSP (over $128 more!), but I just thought I would play three games only on PSP. Winning Eleven 8, Gran Turismo 4 and GTA SA. Then I thought, well I have all those games on PS2 anyway so why the heck buy a PSP. So, the NDS seems absolutely awesome so far and I don't regret the purchase at all. Let's hope that lasts!

Price: US$128
Game (Mario 64DDS): US$29

Luuuurvely jubbbbley!

I played Mario on my bro's DS. It's pretty cool. Very similar to Mario 64 though, i was a bit dissappointed there. In my opinion, the PSP is worth every penny more than the DS. There're a few more games which i'm sure you'd like such as Ridge Racer, Tony Hawks and Wipeout. And that's only now, add onto that the crazy amount of games that Sony products always have released for them and there's gonna be loads of gems. Add onto that the UMD movie support and the fact it is the best looking piece of electronics ever and surely the PSP is the best bet.

But i'm missing out the fact that the DS is actually really good :p It's a good buy, nice one, bet you'll spend all day, everyday playing it :D

I played an instore game on the DS. It was one of these 'show off the touchscreen' games.

I think it is okay, except for that big hinge in the middle between thw 2 screens. Talk about bad design!!!! :yuck:

i hav a ds too! i like it alot. not many good games are out yet so we gotta wait. i think the psp is overpriced. ill probably get both though.

Also bear in mind that the DS is basically an N64 and the PSP is basically a PS2. Not much competition there. The DS is more fun than the PSP, but still there's no competition.

My reason for getting the DS is that as good as the PSP is I don't want to end up forking out money for games that I basically already have on my PS2 just for the sake of playing them on the way to work. If I'm going to play GT4 then I'd much rather play on my big screen and my DFP2 at home than on a six inch screen on the PSP. Same as with the video and JPEG viewing capability. I have a PC for that.

Yes, the DS is way down the technology ladder compared to the PSP, but it is solely a games machine and cheap (like the budgie) and that'll do for me. Also the touch screen is a really neat feature and makes the games much more immersive than normal. I hope the games developers can continue to use it creatively! The flip down screen thing is a great idea too, as with a PSP I would either scratch the screen within the first week or be paranoid about doing so.

Good point, it's going to be a nightmare keeping the PSP tidy. The DS is a better built 'gaming' machine, built for fun rather than the PSP which seems to have been built to make it look cool :p

Well my friend i wouldn't consider it's industrial style build quality to be a factor that 'destroys the rest of the competition'. Sure it's good that you can throw it through a window or at the floor and it won't break, but it doesn't redeem the fact that it's still not up to the generation standard of the PSP.

In summary if you're classing it's robust styling and build as a defining feature then that aims the DS at children or people generally unable to control themselves. But it's not a defining feature and isn't why the DS 'destroys the rest of the competition', in fact no feature springs to mind that leads me to think that the DS has any edge. Sure touch screen is interesting, but that screen is gonna get smudged and scratched and it's not like touchscreen in a handheld is a new feature. My mobile has touchscreen and i've had it for 2 years. In electronics terms 2 years is ancient.

What is new in a handheld though is close to PS2 graphics, full on 16:9 screen, the ability to play movies, and the ability to download game update content onto the memory card (via the PSPs internet browser) such as in Wipeout where you can download new vehicles and tracks and menu skin etc. That my friend is where the PSP destroys the competition.

And the download feature in wipeout can easily tweaked into a web browser(albeit a slow one)

And PSP is a poser's handheld console! :p j/k
