Hi, my PS3 has just died and does anyone have any idea how extract my data?? Its to do with getting my time's for the WRS qualifier in on time.

I dont think im tech savvy enough to try repair YLOD myself so it's looking like il be sending it off to Sony for repair :indiff:

You can't, as it's broken, it'll have to be running before you can do it.

Does it still not cost quite abit for Sony to repair them and you don't even get your own PS3 and HD back?

Might be better off buying a New PS3. That's what i did!

It does, £120 is the last price I have seen quoted and yes you probably won't get the same PS3 back.

After lurking the forums for weeks looking for tunes/tips, this is the one topic that made me sign up.

I definitely feel for you as I just had the same thing happen to me 2 days ago. I have a launch 60 gb console and its been working fine for 3+ years. It just suddenly stopped working the other day when I was just about to win one of the seasonal events races. After extensive research on how to fix it/salvage the save data, it appears the only way to get your data back is by fixing it yourself. I haven't tried it yet but I'll attempt it over the weekend (heatgun method) with help from various sites/youtube videos. I figure I'm already out a PS3. I don't have much to lose except those save files which would be gone anyway if I bought a new PS3 or sent it in to Sony. After putting in 100+ hours into the game, I don't think I have the heart to restart a new GT5 file if I can't get the save back. Best of luck with yours!

To anybody with the launch consoles, make sure you back up your stuff regularly as it appears that more and more of the older consoles are dropping like flies.

I have fixed the YLOD on my launch ps3 6 times now. It's actually a fairly easy fix if you follow the instructions properly. All I have invested is $12 in a tube of arctic silver #5 and I still have enough left for probably 3 more reflows. There are videos on youtube that will show you how to fix it. It's a lot cheaper and you don't lose your save data.

If you are going to buy another one anyway I would at least try to fix the old one so you can extract your save data. If it doesn't work you aren't really out anything and if it does you can sell the old system and get some of your money back. Just my .02.

Good luck!

Yeah the data on your hard drive is encrypted to the motherboard. Not any motherboard, the exact one in your system so if it doesn't work you can't access the data ever again.

Like Woodrow says though you can fix it yourself with a bit of heatsink compound and a guide.
@ Woodrow I'm cranking a launch as well and it went ylod on me after three years. Had it repaired under warranty and by some freak happening it happened again a month later. Another warranty repair, been going ever since. Six YLOD's sounds like your a serial PS3 killer!

All this YLOD talk is kind of freaking me out a little!!! I keep my @March '07 (I think, March after release anyway) clean but the fan still cranks up frequently. I hope that's normal!?!?

I have had this a few times now, if you have a local independant games shop take it there & see if they can bake it to get the reflow. Mine cost £50 and he said if it happens again to bring it back & he would get it done again for no charge - it worked & I was able to back up my files but he has seen the same console about 4 times since !

Launch console = back up often !!!!

All is not lost. Here's the YLOD fix you're looking for. It's not that difficult, just get the right tools and take your time. You need to be aware that this is only temporary, lasting anywhere from a month to 6 months, but it should buy you time to backup all your data. If you want something more permanent you'll need to find someone that can reball the motherboard.

Or you take the HDD out and hook it up to another ps3, or a PC and take your data off of it...

Which would be the easy way.

Wish it were that easy but if you stick your HD into another PS3, you will be prompted to format. PCs also can't read the data off the PS3 HD.

That will not work, the PC won't be able to read it because of the encryption and if you put it into another PS3 it will be formatted.
