I've been playing some games online in the XLink Kai community recently, it's a program that allows you to play games that support LAN play online with people around the world!
This means that you can still play F1: Championship Edition online if you wish to do so, the only problem is finding people who want to play.
Please follow the guide I wrote, however it is essential you have your PC connected to your router wirelessly and your PS3 connected to your PC with an ethernet cable. This only applies to my guide however and it is possible to do it differently.
