You thought Webber's crash was a bit of a monster?...

...then how about Jordan Williams' lucky escape in a recent Formula Palmer Audi race at Snetterton?:

Eek. Yet like Webber's accident, it's a testament to the safety of modern racing cars. Safety in motorsport is always a good thing.

That looks like he nearly landed on the public access road to the track over the bridge...

Did not even seem like careless driving, just unexpected behaviour.

Man do I love simulation racing!

I like how he just hops out like it was a just a typical crash. As has been said, amazing how safe the race cars of today are.👍

Not to mention Richard Teixeira's crash in the Morocco F2 race a few months back (from 1:10 in the first video):

Catching air seems to be catching.

These crashes are really really scary indeed. Thanks to the safety that we have nowadays in the car, and also on the driver itself like the HANS device and more safer and tougher helmets all help for the safety of motorsports.

Thankfully they took the lesson from late Ayrton Senna's crash and after that, the safety has consistently improved.

Was just thinking that.

Looks like he went for a pass & got cut off?

Yeah, was a bit of a naughty move by the guy in front. Gave him nowhere to go at the last second. Apparently the other driver has got a couple of hundred quid fine, but for causing something like that he should have got a racing licence suspension.

I'll echo others' comments though, getting a little worrying how many airborne accidents there are...

Well...yeah. That's what you get when you design a car like a jet plane. F1 cars are extremely light weight, and, with the open wheels, there's more potential for extra air to get underneath the plane-like body. It would seem that modern F1 cars BARELY produce enough downforce to keep them on the road, so they get a little nudge from behind or anything like that, they go flying. (And Mercedes thought they had gotten away from flips)

Not a very well thought out sentence there. How can they produce immense amounts of downforce but not enough to keep them on the road? :dunce:

F1 cars are designed a bit like aeroplanes upside down. They want to stay on the ground at all times. Its actually very difficult to flip or make them fly through aerodynamics - the only thing that aerodynamics changes is the way the car moves once it is airbourne, which is usually a full flip at high speed.
But aerodynamics very rarely cause cars to flip, the Mercedes CLR at Le Mans 1999 being one such example.
In all of these cases in this thread, the cars have all hit something else at high speed which has caused them to get airbourne, the downforce generated by the cars only affected their flight profile, not cause the accidents.
All of them hit the rear of another car and rode up the rear wheel - a very common accident in open wheel formula.

I was going to say... closed wheel racers would be safer... but that CLR brings up an example of where they're not... i seem to remember a spate of Nissans flipping due to some aerodynamic quirk back in the 90's, too... can't recall which ones (help please? Red-topped cars with blue livery?).

maybe regulations should add full body bumpers, like kiddie karts? :D

As Ardius said, every single one of these accidents was caused by a front wheel riding up the rear wheel of the car in front. These accidents have nothing to do with downforce from the wings or the aerodynamics of the car.

But then, you thought that F1 cars got air when they pushed the KERS button too.

The LM sports cars of a few years ago were different though as 3 different makes (Mercedes CLR, BMW LMR and Porsche GT1) all flipped due to air getting underneath them. I don't recall seeing an F1 car getting air without assitance.

NASCAR sees a couple of this kind of accident too-if you get air underneath such a flat surface, it's going to pick up. The surface area of the floor of an F1 car is tiny relative to closed-wheel racers.

LOL That was wierd Interludes she reminds me of Miss. Pasterneck in Two And a Half Men, she is talking about Mark watching porn caused his crash, bit ironic that she is topless.

I give her and 8 out of 10 on the Hot/Crazy Scale. Unfortunately, her faith-based crazy means she falls on the wrong side of the Vicky Mendoza Diagonal.

Bonus points if you know where that's from.

LOL I agree she is pretty hot 7out of 10 I read through her comments on her channel apparently she is a troll and I will do anything to avoid sleep.

sorry for off topic conversation.

Not 7/10 for look, 7/10 on the Hot-Crazy scale. A girl may be crazy provided that she is hot. The crazier she is, the hotter she has to be to compensate. It's from HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER.
