The Defense Department cautioned its American contractors over what it described as a new espionage threat: Canadian coins with tiny radio frequency transmitters hidden inside.

The government said the mysterious coins were found planted on U.S. contractors with classified security clearances on at least three separate occasions between October 2005 and January 2006 as the contractors traveled through Canada.

Intelligence and technology experts said such transmitters, if they exist, could be used to surreptitiously track the movements of people carrying the spy coins.

I'm sure most of us wouldn't ever have to worry about this, but as the opening paragraph mentions, this is definitely very creepy. Even though coins tend to be lost or spent at random, a well-hidden coin or other object might do the trick.

I can see it now..

*mob of gangsters planning to rob the National Teasury*

Gangster1: "Alright, so this is the plan. We go in through the service tunne..

*door breaks down and FBI charge in*

FBIDude: "YOU'RE UNDER ARREST!"

*Gangster#1 has a "wtf?" look on his face*

*FBIDude pulls penny from Gangster's pocket*

FBIDude: "This coin, my friend, has led to your demise."

Gangster1: "DAMN! I knew I shouldn't have opted for change when using my debit card."

Looks like the FBI terminated yours after you read yourself that horrible joke.

Money talks, but I didn't knew it listens as well.

It appears that Machone has some loose change...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it a federal offence in most countries to tamper with or destroy money? And if they aren't tampering with these coins, then surely it comes under counterfeiting?

Wow. That is a really good idea. I wonder how well they represent actual currency.

I was discussing this with a friend and we concluded that the range is the limiting factor. The recieving device would have to be in the same room, so the point would be a little moot. To use it, you would either have to be in the room. "Little does he know it, but I am listening to the guy next to me's conversation through this transmitter. SHHHH."

Maybe when they can send messages about 100 yd.s this tech will be more useful. hehe

Actually, they think it's tracking device. They do mention the transmitter in the article, but no mic.
...Canadian coins? :nervous:
Chinese spies are known to be very active in Canada, which means that Americans are as well. The article also mentions the Russians and I think the French? Which I had never heard about before.

It was the U.S. that issued the warning, but I would have suspected the very contractor that these guys worked for, first. Maybe to monitor them, make sure they aren't getting involved in some fishy business, or in case they are kidnapped. You know, like the DARPA Chief.
