Designed by Vasily Rodionov in 1961 the Zil 112S was one of the Soviet Unions most successful sports racing cars and was used in competition from 1961 to 1969. Two cars were built - one is in the Riga Museum and the other is owned by a Swedish car collector. The spec was quite advanced for the time: fibreglass body based on the look of a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Pontoon racing car. Four wheel disc brakes V8 all aluminium alloy engine which by 1965 had been enlarged to 6,959cc producing 270bhp and giving a top speed of 270kmh. Weight 1300kg.

Above you can see the Zil 112S which was reclothed in a special body for a speed record attempt on the salt flats in July 1962, but this was unsuccessful due to poor weather conditions.

Middle - race record of Zil 112S.

...A Russian race car from Commie era? Wow. Now there's something I've never expected to see. So how many times did it race outside the Iron Wall, and how many times its drivers tried to defect? :D

Never. Domestic championships only. :P
Soviet rally cars, however, did compete in some world cups (e.g. London-Mexico Rally).

Some people here may be surprised, but the Soviet Union did make race cars. Google Moskvitch G5 (1965), for example. Or even GAZ GL-1 (1938-40). Not many of them survived, though.
There were even more rally cars, some of them are suggested here:
