Ever since I installed the new free Zone Alarm, whenever the green Repeat Program pop-up appears for a program's access to the internet (the one after the first, yellow bannered message appears), the whole PC freezes. It's getting a tad annoying now because I'm starting to lose unsaved work from it.

When this happens, I'm not sure it's ZoneAlarm right away. I have to Alt+Ctrl+Del, and the pop-up appears. But not all of it. I press Alt+Ctrl+Del again, and I can see the details. It's really bizarre. The only things I can do is move around in the Task Manager, but even then it's hard. Whenever I click on something, I have to press Alt+Ctrl+Del for it to register. And again, and again... Once, I've managed to click "allow" on the pop-up using this method, making the freeze disappear, but most of the time it doesn't work. I try to terminate the .exe accessing the internet, but sometimes another Task Manager opens on top of the one I was working in, making me start all over again. I can manage to terminate ZL, but it just comes up with an error saying it's not possible. In the end, I have to turn off the PC.

Luckily, once it's happened and rebooted, I can go into ZL and allow the program manually, but this doesn't sort the problem.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm on the verge of installing another firewall altogether.

I would say just get another one.

Can't go wrong with Norton.

Norton is slow, there are a lot of better programs.

edit:
I'm using this firewall:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
It's free and it doesn't give any problems.
It has the option to scan for known programs, so that you get a lot less alerts asking you if the program is allowed to access the Internet.

Do not get Norton.

Any ways, I have the new one also, but it only makes my Counter Strike crash time to time when I'm connecting to a server, but I just reset it and close the program that froze, and ZA still works fine. Just uninstall and reinstall. Also, if it's that bad, just go look for an older version of ZA through Google.

ZA is a great firewall. I use it but I use a older version(4.5.xxx) because the newer versions gave me problems like you're getting. What were you using before installing this new version?

A (torrented) version of the ZoneAlarm Security Suite. This froze a couple of times a week before installing the free version too, but it didn't happen as frequently. It was slowing this PC to a halt, so I decided to put what I had on here back again - just the firewall.

I'll give the older version a go... But will it still get updates? I don't want a firewall that's not updated anymore since it's been replaced.

Updating will only update you to the latest version which you don't want because of the problems you're having. Using the version I use wont hurt anything or mean you're less protected. I'm not sure what they put in the newer versions since they don't like to provide changelogs for some reason. Its up to you on what you want to do. I can find a link for the version I use if you want.
